Review # 33 for Iceman
Them's Fightin' Words
Planetoid Penguins reminds me very much of the Wandering Hamster. The game is intentionally cartoony, with a similar character design to that of Wandering Hamster. Humor and witt abound, making the dialogue more entertaining. Though an RPG, it is obviously of the semi-serious variety, but in this game's case it works well (not all such games pull this off).

I compared the character design to that of the Wandering Hamster, and that is not a bad thing, to be sure. I personally liked the character and enemy graphics, both in their in battle and walkabouts. The hero's in battle graphics did not seem to be recycled (too often we are tempted to copy and paste and simply change a little part of the image), which is a definite plus. The map tiles varied, with the best ones I noticed being in the pyramid setting (they kind of looked "borrowed") and lesser ones elsewhere.

I am not sure about all of the game's music, but at least some was from other games like Super Mario RPG. I think several were those that come with the OHRRPGCE. Nevertheless, the music fit the game well and, very importantly, was not a pain in the ears.

Storyline seems to be largely, if not primarily, along the lines of somewhat random acts of humor, but again the humor is entertaining enough to keep me reading the dialogue. The game play, up to the point I got stuck (early on, actually) seemed pretty good, having the player run errands and completing tasks, while a great many RPGs have you simply wandering almost mindlessly and hacking and bashing enemies by the millions. The problem was that, in the first town, actually, I got stuck. There is an eel that must be beaten and, when I talked to him, I had the option of fighting him then or waiting until later. Well, I chose to wait, as I had not yet purchased the belt (armor) in the shop. When I came back, I could no longer chose to fight him. I checked the text boxes with custom.exe and I think I saw the problem. When I made the choice not to fight, yet, it set a tag. No other boxes that I found changed the tag accordingly such that I could battle it after that.

Despite that little problem with the eel, I guess I overall like the game. I was dubious about it at first, before even downloading it, because most games of this variety seem to turn out mediocre. I think, like the Wandering Hamster, this one actually manages to work as a humorous, semi-serious RPG.
Final Scores
Graphics: 8.5/10.0
I liked the hero, enemy, walkabout, and even attack graphics, and the pyramid map tiles were nice. Most of the rest of the map tiles were basically about average, though maybe somewhat above, what I have seen in most of the OHR RPGs that I have played.
Storyline: 8.5/10.0
I am not sure about true storyline, especially as I did not get to play very far into the game, but to the game's credit it did have lots of humor.
Gameplay: 9/10.0
Again, having only played only a little before running into that problem, it is hard to judge the entire game, but the gameplay seems solid.
Music: 9/10.0
Though, at least mostly, unoriginal, the music seemed pleasant to the ears and very fitting.
Overall Grade: B+
Final Thoughts
Planetoid Penguins is a refreshing mix of RPG and humor with a Wandering Hamster sort of style. I found it entertaining.
