Chaos Nyte
Review # 30 for Chaos Nyte
Them's Fightin' Words
What starts out as a simple firefly hunt explodes into a quest to save the dragons...Sounds like a great idea doesn't it? To bad the game doesn't live up to its intial expectations.

Graphics - Very well done. The map tiles are are detailed and set a dark mood, the enemies look evil and scheming, backgrounds thrust you into the scene. However, there are places where the artist slacked off and reused things. Its really noticable in the characters, who are all based off of Raynio (The main character) graphic. Even his sister's graphic looked like him with a different palette. In fact, only at the end of the demo did I even realize she was a girl.

Storyline - Ouch. The game set such high expectations, a world plunged into darkness, where Dragon Hunters unknowly destoryed their only friends...Dialogue is the biggest problem here. Most of it is badly mashed english, and though I know that Hansai doesn't speak english as his native tounge, it still really hurts the story. Many scenes would of benefited greatly from well thought out dialogue and extending their lengths. The heros seem to jump from plot point to plot point for very lax reasons.

Gameplay - Hmm...well, for the most part the game looks well designed. But the demo takes barely 20 minutes to finish, and with no extras, leaves you hanging...The second town in the game doesn't even have any open houses, just a hole in the wall where a small part of the plot takes place. Theres even a nice path to it. All that hard work for just a hole. The Dragons den is also a hole, set in the corner of a map, in a hard to find location. When you meet the actual dragon, one can't help but wonder how it squeezes out. There are very few battles in the demo, and though they look pretty, they quickly become boring and slow. Confusing maps don't help either, like the extra long hike to find the fireflys, on a large and well mantained path, that ends at the...fireflys. Shouldn't the path be a lot smaller for this?

Music - Original music, though none of it is memorable, music doesn't play in certain areas, and some of the songs are down right annoying.
Final Scores
Graphics: 9/10.0
A bit sloppy here and there, but overall, very pretty.
Storyline: 2/10.0
Its just to hard to understand to enjoy. It could be done so well too.
Gameplay: 4.5/10.0
Just below average, the demo isn't all that fun.
Music: 3/10.0
Poorly done. Ripping would of been better.
Overall Grade: C
Final Thoughts
Well drawn graphics and gripping plot (in theory only) redeem this demo. Maybe the next release will have its act together...
