Review # 18 for Dalaran
Them's Fightin' Words
In 1995 the "Greatest RPG ever made" was released in America. I wasn't really that impressed. That game, Chrono Trigger, and this game, Dimensions 4, have a common theme. They both have to do with time travel. The plot of this game leads a young man to find ancient ruins in a forest near his home town. He reveals the location of the ruins to government agents which promptly chase him out of town and soon enough into a passage through time. There is little more to the game, leaving me to theorize about what excellent plot lines could be developed for such a time travel game :-)

There have been several improvements over Dimensions 3. The graphics of D4 have been improved over those of D3 by adding some pleasant shading effects on the characters. The music is still ripped and still quite good although this time the major music source is Chrono Trigger. (Apparently, the "medireview battle" music is a Scottish battle hymn in BAM format.) The gameplay is also significantly changed due to the fact that spells are now available in shops.

On the down side, the plot is still somewhat loose, and incoherent. Once again, there is an annoying forest maze that gives no hint as to where the next passage might be hidden. I was also slightly thrown, because the attack slot is called "nothing".
Final Scores
Graphics: 6/10.0
Not thrilling, but pretty good. (Gee, what do I expect...)
Storyline: 3.5/10.0
The reasons certain things happen just aren't clear, example: when the agents attack you in your home.
Gameplay: 6.5/10.0
The easy accessibility of a town and magic helped a lot (better than D3)
Music: 5/10.0
Ripped (-2), Hideously appropriate, but I've heard them so many times.
Overall Grade: C+
Final Thoughts
(Demo less than one hour) Excellent potential, but it doesn't look like a star yet.
