Review # 25 for Chaos Nyte
Them's Fightin' Words
I gotta tell ya, I was very happy to finally finish this game. During the review, I managed to uncover a bug in the OHR engine, and the life of a young, bad tempered mercenary in a school/government funded spy project. Though D3 doesn't try as hard as it could, the game does have have it's points. I also talked to Cube quite a bit while trying to determine what the problem was with the engine, and I found out that he's doing an entirely redone version of D3, with brand new everything! With any luck, it'll be a huge improvment over this version.

Storyline- I was strongly reminded of Xerian, with the barely completed plot, and poor reasons for exploring. Though the dialog is good, there is far to little of it, and nothing other then the essentials is ever revealed. I won't go over the plot again, since PR did a fine job already, but I can say that this game took forever to beat. Not actual game length, which took me a bit over three hours, but the fact that the game really isn't that interesting. Sure, the job system can hold your attention for a bit, but only the black mage job is capable of defeating any of the bosses, and is actually just as powerful as the regular clothes set. The lack of NPCs and towns with working doors really distracts from the gaming experience. Most of the game world is a blur, I don't remember any towns or areas very well, because they were so empty. Heck, some parts of the really huge world map lack enemies at all. I really hope the new version is everything I hope it will be. The heroes of the story, other then Maz himself, were interesting only during the initial meeting. The rest of the time they were either silent or offered comments about the obvious. A lot seems to be borrowed from the FF series, from the Job concept to the fact that Mike’s a black mage. Well...okay, the mountains are definitely from Excitebike. Damn, that was a cool game wasn’t it?

Graphics- You can see Cube's graphics get better as the game goes along, which is kind of interesting to watch. Map tiles are simplistic, but give the world it's own unique style, which can be seen in Cube's other games. Very...well, cubish. Battle graphics are minimal, with rather boring enemies, (Frogs? Huh.) that were drawn with little effort. Still, I've seen much, much, worse. Overall the graphics are tolerable, but you're not going to be impressed.

Gameplay- Creative dungeons don't make up for constant battles. Maz and his party never seem to get strong, and some areas become impossible unless you run from fights. The first two missions for Maz have him encounter HUNDREDS of security droids, and Cube really stopped trying with enemy design and different sets. You can also run from boss battles, which wouldn't be so bad, but you can run from one important one that you're suppose to lose. Argh. The map designs are decent, with the huge world map being balanced out by empty towns. Stock up on items in the first town, because that's it. The game will take you awhile to get through, though Cube claims to be able to get through the game in a little less then an hour, I don't see how. When you add in how the game doesn’t end, it just doesn’t let you enter the next dungeon, you’ve got a boring game.

Music- Ripped from popular games, placed well, a bit uncreative though. These tunes have been used in the same situations too many times.
Final Scores
Graphics: 5/10.0
There decent. No more effort then needed, but certainly not ugly. Plain Jane.
Storyline: 3/10.0
Go play the Final Fantasy series. You'll get the ungarbled experience.
Gameplay: 2/10.0
WADDA YA MEAN YOU HAVEN'T BUILT THE INN YET?!
Music: 5/10.0
Standard music, for a decent game.
Overall Grade: D+
Final Thoughts
D3 reminds me of poor Super NES RPG. Not in graphical style, but in how you'll play for a while, get bored, and then pick it up again in a few days, mostly because you have nothing better to play. Keep your eyes open for the new version.
