Review # 2 for The Drizzle Can you find the Sphinx in this picture?
Them's Fightin' Words
Mr. Triangle's Shitty Adventure... the name says it all right? Wrong. There's more to this game than meets the eye... as long as you never ever read a textbox.
Graphics
Graphics weren't as bad as I'd expected with a title like Mr. Triangle's Shitty Adventure 5. They were by no means stunning. Mr. Triangle is a triangle, for God's sake. And ChuckRat is, well, a rat. Hero graphics were alright. For the most part, the style of the graphics was constant throughout. Enemies and heroes were good, as were the walkabouts. They weren't amazing in any sense of the word, but, like I said, the style of the author was evident throughout.

A big problem was the maptiles. This game had some horrible maptiles, in sharp contrast to the quality of the rest of the graphics. Most were made up of 1-3 colors and were very bland. They could use a lot of work.

A great feature of this game is cutscenes. At times there will be animated backgrounds made im MSPaint that aren't mind blowingly awesome, but they get the point across in a way that is more interesting than a plain textbox.

Storyline
This must be where the "shitty" part comes up. Actually, the story line was pretty original, and I enjoyed it to a certain extent. From the beginning, you're just wandering around figuring out why Mr. Triangle has even fallen into this world in the first place. There's Slither who hates you for some reason and you hate him too and must destroy him. At the end, all of the story takes place. You find out who everyone is and what's going on and you feel like you haven't done much. I'll sum it up like this: You chase Slither around for a LONG time and fight him A LOT. Then you fight him some more. Then some more. Then some more. At last, you get to the end, and you fight him some more. And he escapes again. So you chase him and fight him one last time, this time without the help of your friends (the reasoning behind this was explained but it didn't really make sense).

Basically, the game didn't need to be this long to tell the story. In the end, you find out why Mr. Triangle is there and what's going on. You're sort of satisfied, but you're really more pissed that you had to spend that much time fighting Slither.

Dialogue was tame. I'm all for the use of profanity, but this really used it in a way that cursed just for the sake of cursing. Blech. Lame. But then again, the game is kind of a joke game, so it fits, but it didn't work for me.

Gameplay
Gameplay was good. It was much better than pretty much any other OHR game because, get this... you HAD to use something other than the regular attack to win. GaryGator was useless without spells, Mr. Triangle could steal but had USELESS spells, Chuckrat had powerful special attacks, and the Creator was a strong attacker also with some curative magic. Tony Timebot I found to be completely useless, as was the caveman. If they were in the group, they were tossing out items the whole time, which added a-whole-nother aspect to the battles. Play this game.
  Battle
This is one of the few games where I didn't often put a brick on the keyboard and leave.

Also, though each character was unique, I found some to be completely useless. At one point, the group is split up into two groups of three, and I get stuck with the three characters that I'd deemed "useless" pretty much from the start. It was tough to beat the boss at the end of that section.

  Map Design
Map design wasn't that bad. Maptiles aside, they were generally pretty interesting. Each was different from the next with its own unique theme. Though the dungeons were incredibly short and linear, and the towns were pointless for anything really, other than very occasional inn use and potion buying. I also rarely bought any equipment, since the best items could be found on enemies anyway.
  Balance
For the most part, the battles were pretty balanced. Your characters DID die ocassionally in normal battles (not too much and not too little) which was something I could appreciate. I don't like getting whooped by the enemies, but I don't like whooping them either. That's balance. Where the game lacked balance was in experience distribution. As the game winded down, the enemies started giving out amounts of experience that made very little impact on the amount of of experience I needed. So I said "Screw it" and pretty much ran from most of the random encounters. They weren't worth taking the beating right before the next boss. (Hint: Buy a lot of curative items. They're more useful than any of the equipment you buy.)

At the end, I fought the last boss a couple of times and got utterly destroyed. So I decided to try leveling up first. I did, and I got this move for the creator called "Regeneration". All of the boss battles became insanely easy with this move, since it would regenerate health for every character in your party. Cast it a couple of times and that boss doesn't stand a chance. (Actually the regeneration move was bugged in the game file, so I had to go into custom.exe and turn off the "Cure instead of Harm" bitset.

I also found one boss to be impossible to beat, and that was Apocalypse. This guy would heal himself upwards of 400 HP whenever he felt like it (not just when he was weak). I had no character with attack power sufficient enough to deal with this problem. So I got killed many, many times. In the end, I went into custom.exe and removed the healing spell as one of his normal moves. He was much easier this way.

Music
Mostly ripped. I didn't recognize all of it, though some of it was very recognizable (the underground theme from Mario Bros.) which I really didn't like. Some musical pieces are inseparable from their sources, and this happened from time to time. A couple of the songs didn't survive the transfer from midi2bam very well and sounded ugly.
Enjoyment
Very enjoyable. Battles were pretty fun compared to other OHR games and required strategy and thought. I probably won't play this game again though, since the story was rather uneventful.
Final Blows
It was fine. Graphically, needs some major touch-ups here and there. But don't focus on that. Focus on the battle system that relies on more than just hitting the spacebar key. Also: Try the fighting arena. It's a challenge.
Apocalypse, straight out of MSPaint.

Apocalypse, straight out of MSPaint.
Final Scores
Graphics: 6/10.0
The author's style was refreshingly different and pretty consistent throughout. Maptiles sucked though.
Storyline: 2.5/10.0
There wasn't really any rising action to this story. It just sort of goes on, suddenly peaks, then ends. And the dialogue could use some work.
Gameplay: 7.5/10.0
All around good job. Some of the dungeons were good and the battles were better than most games.
Music: 4/10.0
Music needs to be from less obvious sources.
Enjoyment: 7.5/10.0
Fun. That's all I have to say about that.
Overall Grade: B-
Final Thoughts
Mr. Triangle's Shitty Adventure 5 is not as shitty as the name implies.
