Could anyone tell me where to fetch that lullaby-like midi from EOTE2 opening? Its the very first bg music directly after starting a new game. It also can be heard at the castle of the 3 remaining Wizard. Raided whole google to no avail >.<
I could use either the whereabout of the file or the password to the .RPG of EOTE2 to somehow export it. Thx in advance! |

EOTE2 is an older game, and if I remember correctly it was released before the OHRRPGCE supported midi. That means the file is going to be in .BAM format.
If you can contact Valkayree, he might be willing to share the original file with you... but I am not sure how to contact him. I haven't seen him on the forums in years :( |

Well, yeah, i wouldn't have bug anyone on forum if i could contact him, that's why i've tried to look around here, hoping for a 3rd party solution :/
I suppose there isn't any other way to extract that .BAM from the .RPG ? |

Why would you want to take a music from an indie game?
I worked on that game together with Valkayree and I can tell you for sure that's it's impossible to contact him. I tried for years to find any internet traces of him, but to no avail.
The one who did the music of EOTE2 was Valkayree's best friend (which I had only contact with through Valkayree) and I'm not sure if he'd be happy about someone using his music for something else. _________________ Snippy:

I would take it for multiple reasons:
1.) i was like somewhat 13 years old when first got exposed to EOTE2 which was my favourite along with old-timer SNES RPG FF4 and i'd like to hear it without opening the game over and over again as it brings up nice memories
2.) i also would attempt to convert it to .mid --> Winamp compatibility
I presume you meant Kain as its composer and you might be right concerning he would feel uneasy about it although:
In my perspective both him and Valkayree seemingly ceased to develop
RPGs further either entirely or partially, including the background music pieces, so I've risked the assumption they wouldn't mind if i'd utilize it for non-commercial purposes. I mean digging up something abandoned for merely self-entertainment shouldn't be ethically debatable as i wouldn't violate any of their author rights with it. Furthermore MIDIs from majority of RPGs from that era are available on either a fansite, youtube or practically anywhere if you google them. To be honest i've regged on CP site only to fetch that file via contacting either one of the authors or someone who knows them, and it seems it was a futile effort such as googlin for hours :/
Your point is taken still. But note i'm not developing, MODding, reshacking any RPGs, nor taking credits for anything created by someone else.
I want only that melody on my comp, and getting the original file instead of recording the sound output in .wav only to fiddle with recomposing it in .mid should have been both more accurate and faster.
Hope my explanation was detailed enough |

Oh, if you just want it to listen to, that seems like no problem.
Both Rya and I had assumed that you meant to use it in your own game.
I forget if EOTE2 has a password for editing. If not, it is a simple as loading it up in a recent copy of custom.exe and exporting the file.
If not, you can get bam files from the playing.tmp folder while you play, but the file extension is the song ID number instead of .bam, so finding the specific song you want without knowing the id number can be tedious guess-and-check work. |

Not everyone is working on a game and needs to rip music! I like to listen to the soundtracks of lots of games, including even a couple OHR ones.
But which version of the OHRRPGCE did you use to play EOTE2? If you used the copy of game.exe that's included in the EOTE2 download, then that will be an ancient DOS version that can play BAM files directly, using the OPL2 synthesis chip. (Modern computers usually don't have this chip, and you would have to use DOSBOX or VDMSound to emulate the chip). Anyway, modern versions of the engine convert BAM files to MIDI to play them, but the choice of instruments is sometimes bad (BAM instruments don't necessarily map to MIDI instruments), and loop points are lost. I think it wrecked most of the music in Sword of Jade for example. Both MIDIs and BAMs will sound different on different computers. But I just listened to the MIDI conversion, and it sounds great except for one instrument.
Winamp can actually play bam files directly using the Modplug plugin! Pretty cool. It's ironic that Winamp has far better support for BAM files than the OHR does. AFAIK, in addition to other Hamster Republic games, they are the only programs on the planet which support it.
Anyway, passwords on OHR games aren't meant to keep out people who want to get past them.
You can get the midi conversion of a BAM by looking in the temporary folder created by (a modern copy of) game.exe, which on Windows is in C:\Documents and Settings\$USER\Local Settings\Temp\ohrrpgce$DATE\playing.tmp. The song must have played at least once. If you want the BAM copies, here they are (add .bam extension to each file):

(As I told Rya, Valkayree was really easy to find with a web search though doesn't seem to have any web presence). He's working as a biochemist. |

Thank you Bob and TMC, i have it finally
Use the "July 31 2012 alectormancy+2" version of OHR as old game.exe didn't play music under XP. It did under Win98 if i recall right. Or back then, i had yet an other version of OHR game.exe without noticing it.
If i knew OHR builds a temp too [DOSish interface mislead me, thought it loads directly to RAM or the like], would have fetch it without bugging any of you
Btw, since the extremely limited support for .BAMs, CP community might have a use of AdPlug. Has executables on both DOS and Linux platform, plugins for Winamp and XMMS along with the sourcecode, just in case. |

Ah, AdPlug is the program (with Winamp plugin frontend) that I meant, not ModPlug.
I've been thinking of adding an OPL2 emulator to the engine to play BAMs properly, but it's really low priority. AdPlug, DOSBox, VDMSound, and lots of other programs (such as DOOM ports) all use the OPL2 emulator from MAME. I would use that directly. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |
