DIY Gamer had a little feature about an old program called Game-Maker from the 90s. This is unrelated to the current Game Maker you all know and love, and had infact been discontinued by the time the current one was even produced. I thought I'd ask the community here to see if anyone remembered; apparently it once had a pretty thriving community, but slipped into complete obscurity since the 90s. Did any of you older members use it? Were there any other tools similar that just totally disappeared? The 90s were an interesting time for this sort of software, thanks to the whole Shareware thing. I was too young to really remember much besides Battle Beast and Descent II, so I'm a little out of touch with this.

It looks familiar. That may be the one I bought but returned when it didn't run on my computer.

I had this when I was quite young (about 8 or 9) ... I never really figured out how to use it though. Reading this is quite interesting, thanks!

haha! I would have been delighted to have discovered this back in the day. The game-maker that inspired me to make the OHRRPGCE was relatively primitive compared to that.

Wow, that's awesome. And with 20x20 tiles, 320x200 resolution and "the only supported music format weird and proprietary", the games look a lot like OHR games. But it has a lot of features that the OHR still doesn't have, like good animation. I think I'll draw some inspiration from it :)

There's a wiki which has lots of information about the engine.

You can see lots of screenshots of the very nice editors here and here.

We need a Wiki like that. One unlike everybody else's. Cool engine from the screenshots, but I'm stickin' with OHR.

Oh wow, I actually played this, and just a couple of years after it was released, too.

If somebody makes a cool customized Mediawiki skin for the OHRRPGCE wiki, I would be happy to install it on the wiki server.

Downloaded the article, will read it later, considering giving it a shot.

Hmm... I'm not 100% sure where, but I've definitely seen the game from those screenshots before.

I think it was one of the games on this "500 Games" CD that I used to have back when I was in 5th or 6th grade. Most of the games on the CD were really odd random shareware, if I remember right, and this one seems like it would fit in pretty well.

Never heard of the Game Maker, though. If I had known it existed back then, I probably would've been begging my parents for a copy of it. XD
