NPC locations for the current map have always been stored in the SAV file. I mean ALWAYS, right back to the 4-map days.

Last night I realized that the NPC locations are not restored when you load.

I never really payed much attention to NPC location loading, so I have no idea if it ever worked correctly, or if it worked correctly, when did it first break?

I do now have a fuzzy memory of somebody telling me that this used to work and then got broken, but I can't remember who said it, and I am not even totally sure that it was a real conversation that actually happened. It might be a false memory that leaked over from an alternate universe where I ha--- TIME PARADOX!!!!

I just did a test on Rusalka 10032005, and they weren't holding their positions then, either. So, it's at least as old as that. I'll edit this post as I go back farther in time (assuming I have older versions that would allow that).

Edit 1: In Custom Version 06-11-2001 (The oldest version of CUSTOM that I have as far as I know...not including that one that's on Castle Paradox), the NPC save state is just as broken. So this bug is at least nine years old.

Edit 2: I found an old GAME player version dated back to 12-09-2000, but it's very uncooperative with games not made for that version. They're either "obsolete," or "unsupported," and none of them want to run "as intended." I tried testing Memoria and I couldn't even walk through the doors. So, this version was wasted.

Edit 3: But that's okay, because the October '98 version that's downloadable here doesn't save NPC positions, either.

Conclusion: This feature never worked and you were imagining this conversation.

Ok, on a map there are npcs. Now, some of these are insignificant that say unintelligent things like "My grandpa is the proprietor of the town." Then there are multifaceted ones that progress the story such as a protector telling the main character that he cannot pass. Now let’s say after achieving this task, he steps aside. no biggy. Now, let’s speak you step exterior of the map you were on. Then you come back in. The guard is still there!

When NPC location saving is finished, this will be much easier.

Right now, I would set a tag that indicates that the NPC has moved. Then I would write a map autorun script that checks the tag, and instantly moves the NPC

And yes, RogerBlake, your signature link is ultra-suspicious... but http://xkcd.com/810/

Yeah, we were just talking in #slimesalad... if he is a spambot, he's better than half the real users.

My wild theory is that RogerBlake's is a real OHR user, but his web browser has been infected with malware that is detecting form entry fields named "signature" and automatically populating them with spam links.

Roger, have you checked your computer lately for viruses and spyware?
