Uh oh...

Yes, it's for real this time.

On February 28, 2009, the seven-year wait is over.

Awesome presentation as usual. Looks like it's going to be a pretty far out story.

Any info about the features / gameplay? Can't really watch the trailer at work especially not with sound. Also what does coming soon mean? Like, a complete game will be released on Feb 28th?

Thanks. This video was lifted right from the Powerstick Man intro. Obviously, the "Coming Soon" will be obsolete by the time Powerstick Man: XE comes out, but whatever.

The story will be pretty crazy...later.

It's all setup right now. The appeal for me is its moodiness. It's almost a total opposite of Powerstick Man's "Summer Blockbuster" mentality. It's like one of those indie films you never heard of, but appreciate when you see it.

I think it's gonna be an awesome time for some.

Well, it's about my friends, obviously. Specifically, mah freend Amy.

There's gonna be random battles and treasures. Probably be some generic NPCs and healing items that don't work very well.

Gonna be tons of "block" graphics to suit my latest art style...

No, seriously--

It's somewhat traditional, but not really. There are random battles, yes, but not that many, and certainly not enough to call it a genuine grind-fest. Granted, this could change slightly in the next couple weeks as I start populating a couple of my newer areas. But as of now, there's not enough to call it a battle frenzy.

When random battles do happen, they don't just happen. Enemies will usually spring up from out of nowhere and surround the Unknown Woman using generated NPCs. The battles will commence as usual. But if she reaches a certain level, she'll initiate what's called an "Auto Kill" (borrowed directly from Earthbound) and parlay the attack with a stab of her knife (and still collect the rewards as if she'd actually entered battle). The auto kill kicks in at different levels depending on the enemy. Right now, there's only one enemy type this affects, but I'm expecting it to cover three or four types by the time I release the game.

The game has also been promoted for years as one of the most detail-oriented RPGs on the OHR. Granted, I don't know how true that is anymore (it is, after all, no longer 2002 and there have been some stellar titles released since then). But I've poured out every ounce of detail I could muster in this thing and the length of time it's taken me to finally decide it's release-ready I think proves it. It's still technically the precursor to all those neat tricks you've been seeing in those Powerstick Man videos in my journal.

As an example, here are some screenshots of some animations I just implemented a couple hours ago:

Though, this is still an RPG, there are some fake "platformer" moments. In the above example, the woman must jump to the lower plank to advance the map.

Note: It's automatic. The player doesn't have to do anything other than walk to the end of the plank.

An example of my anal-retentive game design tendencies. She doesn't just land on the board. She nearly drives it into the abyss upon impact. Good thing that bar stops her.

Getting back up is no simple affair. She needs to first find a grappling hook and equip it as an "Accessory." Not that she needs to return to the top, but if for some reason she thinks she forgot some treasure somewhere, it's good to have that option. She'll spin the grappling hook like a lasso before flinging it to the top board.

Note: As of this writing, the second half of the animation (the part where she actually scales the cliff) has yet to be drawn. But it'll be ready by the time I release this.

Notice the "accessory" comment? She'll need to use certain equippable items to solve puzzles or to strategically advance a level.

And I'd get into more about the game's mechanics, but I don't want to ruin the surprise.

You can find out all about it at the end of the month. The February 28th release will consist of "Chapter 1" only. Should probably take no more than 90 minutes to finish.
