|

Hey Guys,
Today the monthly voting for Epic Marathon: The OBC Network begins.
Rules:
Just vote for each released episode within its release month according to your favorites.
Top vote earns 10 points toward overall score, second earns 9, etc.
Any released episode that goes unvoted will receive 5 points toward its overall score.
Released Episodes for September and October:
OHR House Ep 6
Kitty House Ep 3
Let me know if I missed any.
This will be the official voting thread until the end of May.
Let's keep those episodes rolling. _________________ Progress Report:

Whoops, I'm a couple days late posting the results. Sorry about that.
The September-October monthly results are in. And it looks like we have an unprecedented tie. At a whopping zero votes each, it looks like both games (OHR House 3: Week 6 and Kitty House: Week 3) will be getting the same obligatory 5-point bonus. [fanfare]Yay![/fanfare]
Congratulations to JSH and Onlyoneinall for this excellent achievement.
You may now commence your votes for the November releases.
They are:
...
wait for it...
Nah, just kidding. Nothing's been released this month. Go OHR!!!
Maybe we can just vote for the Halloween games again. _________________ Progress Report:

I am still working on my Episode one. It's taking me much longer than I had hoped. (It was originally supposed to be a double Epic Marathon and Halloween entry. Whoops.) I'm currently trying to aim at late December or Early January release, so I can at least have time to do an Episode two before the end of the contest. _________________ Calehay |

That's fine.
And for anyone who wants to incorporate Epic Marathon 6's theme into an episode at some point may do that, as well. I'll be revealing the details for that sometime around January 25th. _________________ Progress Report:

I might just opt for the screenplay option.
I've a few other projects've gotten in the way. |

I kinda forgot I had this running on both forums, but participation has been so poor that I doubt anyone noticed.
But now is a good time to bring it back to CP.
Okay, last minute warning, folks. Midnight marks the beginning of the final month, so if you wanted your favorite game creation to be forever immortalized in print, now is the time to start popping out your epic masterpiece.
Any game can become a part of the Epic Marathon. Just make a selectable two-or-more-part episode (like the OHR House series or Sam & Max if you need a playable example) and you're eligible for the contest.
Now for the monthly results:
The month of April has granted us one of the finest episodes of the contest (in my opinion), OHR House: Heroes Ep. 7. If you haven't watched it yet, do so today.
And like the previous month, this month's entry is uncontested (unless someone wants to declare his terrible game the first of two parts), so RMZ gets 10 points by default.
If anyone wants to challenge this automatic point award, feel free to release a second episode in May and I will put this month up for a vote. The same can be said of any game released for any month since September 25th. If you love competition and if you love winning, start making those episodes. You have 31 days left.
The monthly bonus points so far:
OHR House 3 by JSH
5 (Sept/Oct)
9 (Feb)
10 (March)
24 - Total
OHR House Heroes (includes Villains bonus episode) by RMZ
15 (Feb)
10 (April)
25 - Total
Note: Surlaw can claim 10 points for his participation on Villains.
Kitty House by Onlyoneinall
5 (Sept/Oct)
5 - Total
And there's still time to update old Epic Marathons for the 50-point spike.
Final stretch, guys. May 31st will be here and gone before you know it.
EDIT:
Updated Roster for April:
OHR House: Heroes Week 7 -- RMZ
OHR House: On the Plantation Final -- JSH (pending fairness vote)
Siloloquy Mystery Pt. 1 -- Uncommon
Siloloquy Mystery Pt. 2 -- Uncommon
Voting should be done before the weekend ends. _________________ Progress Report:

All right, series is closed. Time to tally the final monthly scores.
First off, unless someone pulled the wool over my eyes, Red was the only one to release an entry for the month of May (House Heroes Week . Therefore, he gets 10 points by default.
Which makes the final score look like this:
OHR House 3: On the Plantation by JSH
5 (Sept/Oct)
9 (Feb)
10 (March)
10 (April)
34 - Total
OHR House Heroes (includes Villains bonus episode) by RMZ
15 (Feb)
9 (April)
10 (May)
34 - Total
Note: Surlaw can claim 10 points for his participation on Villains.
Soliloquy by Uncommon
16 (April) - Includes both episodes (8 pts each)
16 - Total
Kitty House by Onlyoneinall
5 (Sept/Oct)
5 - Total
So it seems we have a tie between the houses.
Fortunately, the monthly vote is a bonus to the contest vote, so a tie is arbitrary.
Congrats to both JSH and RedMaverickZero for pulling 34 points ahead of the base vote.
Congrats to Uncommon for pulling 16 points ahead of the base vote.
Congrats to Onlyoneinall for pulling 5 points ahead of the base vote.
Now to decide which Design Missions made it into the entries:
Quote: | Mission #1: What’s a television show without a cast of characters? Create an opening title sequence with the names of your actors (or characters as actors) superimposed over their portraits, and maybe layer it with some action from the show. |
Although neither House or House Heroes provides an opening credits in the fashion that I alluded to here, both shows do have character bio screens which can pass as credits, so I'll award the Design Mission #1 bonus to both shows. It's possible that Kitty House has one, too, so I'll have to go back and double-check. If so, then all three get this bonus.
+10 Plantation, +10 Heroes, +10 Kitty (tentative)
Quote: | Mission #2: Create a scene where the main character(s) haggle with a door-to-door pizza deliveryman. |
House Heroes had the dinosaur eating the deliveryman scene if I remember correctly (haggle won by resident).
+10 Heroes.
Quote: | Mission #3: For a sitcom, introduce a crazy landlord who thinks the main character is gay. For a domestic drama (or soap opera), have the lead female give birth to sextuplets and sell five of the children to another television show. For a police drama (leftover from last year’s design mission #3) include a mad scientist as a forensic specialist—his babble should lead to something genius, but it should still come out like babble (this can work for 24 style thrillers and science fiction shows, too). For a reality or game show, turn a famous out-of-work child star into a contestant. |
I think one could almost argue that Dr. Mu satisfies the mad scientist argument. However, the objective specifically states that the mad scientist belongs to a police drama (or action drama). For now, I will not award the bonus, but I'm open to a debate if anyone disagrees with this decision.
Note: Heroes already achieved the maximum bonus score of 30, so an argument doesn't matter now.
Quote: | Mission #4: Interrupt the episode with a commercial for another game or project. |
I don't think any of the games did this.
Quote: | Mission #5: Make your characters afraid of the coming of the Werewaffle. |
Heroes had this in the bag, except that the monster was a werewolf, not a werewaffle. Therefore, no bonus for you.
Quote: | Mission #6: Implement voice acting or a catchy theme song to your main credits (as long as it’s not “the Incredible Mikey Tâ€). |
Both Plantation and Heroes had voice acting and Plantation had the Rickroll song during the clip show montage.
+10 Plantation, +10 Heroes
Quote: | Mission #7: Advertise at least three real life products within the context of your story (the more insane the product, the better—but it must be something I can actually go to Publix or some real life establishment to buy). |
Don't recall anyone doing this.
Quote: | Mission #8: Create an OBC Network logo to flash at the start of your main episode (you can do this for all episodes for continuity, but you only need to do it for one to get the points). |
No one took advantage of this.
And now let's see what rules were broken:
Quote: | 1. For this year only, the primary rule of subtitles will be dismissed. New games (anything not related to OHR House) should at least have “For the OBC Network†written in its about line, but I won’t impose any penalties if it’s not. Youtube videos and screenplays can list the name in their opening scenes if the author wants to, but again, it’s not a requirement this time. |
Since it's not a requirement, no one can break it.
Quote: | 2. Each major element of the game must be credited to someone (graphics, music, story, and plotscripting). I will allow ripping, but the source of the rip must be recognized. You don’t have to credit every individual tile specifically, but you must state that graphics were ripped from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, or whatever other game you might choose to rip from. Same applies to music. Music from a commercial game can be credited as a whole, rather than by individual tracks. Only specific songs must be credited specifically (i.e. Sting—“Desert Roseâ€). Anything ripped from public domain sources only need to be credited as public domain. You may NOT rip graphics or music from other OHR games without the author’s permission. Violations will result in immediate disqualification. |
I seem to recall credit being given wherever it's due in all instances.
Quote: | 3. The game release paradigm has also changed since last year’s contest. One of the staples of the Epic Marathon contest since its inception in 2002 was to keep an entry a secret until the deadline, sharing only certain details to keep one game in cohesion with another. However, because this year requires games to be presented as a series of short episodes forming a season’s worth of content, installments can be released as they’re finished. |
Which means you can't break anything here. Good job.
Quote: | 4. Anybody can work on any game. One contestant may collaborate on two games, two contestants may collaborate on one game, or all contestants may collaborate on all games. It doesn’t really matter. The stipulation is that only one contestant may take official ownership of the game. Everybody else will be counted as “collaborators.†|
We all know who owns what. There shouldn't be any confusion.
Quote: | 5. Consistency is only relevant to a game’s specific content. While the three OHR Houses all tie into each other by name, I don’t expect other titles to do the same. Again, the binding thread here is that all the games must be presented as a season’s worth of short episodes based around some story the author chooses. |
Everyone has more than one episode tying into the story.
Quote: | 6. Entries must have an ending. Contestants are not required to complete the entire game as the story intends, but there must be a defined point where the program ends. Do not submit a game that hangs (leaving the player wondering if there’s anything else to do). There must be a working “game over†script implemented in the last playable area, and it should ideally show up at the end of a completed game, or at least at the end of a completed act. Please do not end the game in the middle of a scene. That would be inconsiderate to the players. (Note: this is a staple rule. I don’t suspect to have this problem with this year’s entries.) |
And my suspicion was accurate. Good job keeping everything tightly contained, guys.
Quote: | 7. Epic Marathon, though preferably made with the OHR, doesn’t have to be exclusive to it. Providing the contestant can finish the game within the time allotted, he or she can use the game engine of his choice. |
Or the screenplay of his choice, as Uncommon reminded us.
Quote: | 8. Specific to this year’s contest only, a contestant may submit the continuation of a game he’s already released to the public if it means turning the game into a series. This means OHR House, OHR House: Heroes, OHR House Kitty, I Made Dis, or anything that’s minimal or absent of gameplay can be submitted as a game entry if new episodes are included. The condition is that the new episodes must be selectable from a main menu like those found in the OHR House games. |
Uncommon's entry doesn't do this, but then again, it's not a game, so there's no penalty here.
Quote: | 9. For a game, Youtube video, or screenplay to be eligible, it must have a minimum of two episodes and at least one of those episodes has to be released during the contest period. |
Everyone met this requirement.
So, for the first time in Epic Marathon history, no penalties were given. Good job, guys.
Lastly, everyone was permitted to create or update an old Epic Marathon entry for 50 points. No one took advantage of this, but for anyone who decides to update an old game last minute, the 50 points can go toward the results of Epic Marathon 6: Boston, Maryland.
So now for the final compiled scores. Again, if there's any dispute over mission objectives or penalties, now is the time to address them.
OHR House 3: On the Plantation
(34)+10+10 = 54
OHR House: Heroes
(34)+10+10+10 = 64
Soliloquy Mystery (sorry, Uncy, I keep forgetting the full name)
(16)+nothing = 16
Kitty House
(5)+10 = 15
Overall judging comes next. I'd like to commence voting now (through here or through PM), as the 8-bit contest ends the same day as the original calendar voting period for this contest began, and chances are that everyone who was gonna check out the OBC games have already watched them anyway.
However, I'll extend the voting period past the 7th if for any reason there are still people out there who intend to vote who haven't had a chance to watch any of these. Otherwise, it ends on the 7th.
Note: Contestants can vote on their own games. _________________ Progress Report:

We got four votes so far. Let's aim for ten by Sunday. If you haven't voted, please do.
It only takes a minute of your time.
1. Just hit the "Post Reply" button in the thread or the "PM" button under my name.
2. Then type out four names, starting with the one you liked the most and ending with the one you liked the least. Or, if you haven't watched them all, just vote for the ones you've played. Unplayed games get the minimum score, which in this case is 7.
3. Hit "Submit." You don't even have to preview for grammatical correctness. If I see OR House: Plat nation, I'll know you're referring to OHR House 3: On the Plantation. It's real easy.
4. No description required. While you're welcome to explain why you like a game as much as you do, I'm not requiring it. Just type out the names. That'll be enough.
And that's it. It's easy. It's fast. It'll help secure your favorite author's place (and his favorite OHR game) in literature.
Even if you didn't make a game for Epic Marathon, you can still vote. This isn't a popularity club. Your involvement won't make you look wanting. There's no reason not to vote. Even if you lurk. Even if you're on the run from some unknown stalker. That's what the PM button is for.
Vote today. Your favorite author needs you.
(And make a game for Boston, Maryland. You only got four weeks to do it. I'd like to give two authors this exclusive prize--well, not exclusive to each other, obviously. But let's make something anyway. I'm sure you can slap something together in a day's time if that's all you have to devote to it.)
EDIT: Good Lord, I'm the only one posting in this thread... _________________ Progress Report:

I've played and watched Heroes AND House 3. Therefore I'll vote between those two. I preferred House Heroes, even though House 3 has some excellent writing and is worth watching too. No disrespect to JSH, who obviously worked hard, but this is simply a matter of taste.

Pretty much this, but it bears mentioning that Soliloquy was also great.
1- OHR House Heroes
2- OHR House 3
