WELL MY FRIEND, FRUITY LOOPS IS JUST THE PERFECT SOFTWARE FOR THE AMATEUR ASPIRING DRUM AND BASS SEQUENCER. YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH MAKE TRACKS IN LIKE 30 SECONDS. FOUR ON THE FLOOR!

Try Acid. It is essentially the same thing as Fruity Loops but the name isn't quite so... fruity. Honestly, though, both programs are for twits. It's just cut and paste generic loops and *poof* you made a "song!" In 20 seconds! I would say it is the musical equivalent of ripping graphics. Sure your game may look pretty (or your "song" may sound nice) but in the end you are just a nerd-bomb taking credit for other people's work. I recommend learning how to play a drum and/or bass before trying to make Drum and Bass music. Or buy some 1200s...

For someone just beginning, I would say those programs are perfect. I first started with a Magix program 8 years ago that had a TON of pre-made loops, and it was an invaluable lesson in the basics, like arrangement and use of octaves. The point was not so much writing songs, but experimentation, and that's the best way in my opinion to start learning to write music.

Fruity Loops is good for people who are new to music production software, even though it's geared toward electronic genres, and it only supports its own VSTi's.

If you want host programs that are more compatible with marketed VSTi's of good orchestral quality, you'll want things like Sonar, ACID (does support VSTi's, but it has a cluttered UI), Nuendo (which is ungodly expensive, but I'm sure there are torrents of it), Cubase, or if you're handy with Macs: Pro Tools (which is by far the most technical).
