That's a great tutorial!
But now Roberta looks a little...bloated. _________________ Look back and you've already lost.

One great part of it that a lot of people (including me in the past, and your re-draw) miss is:
"The lighter tone should be applied to surfaces facing towards the light source. The darker tone should be applied to surfaces facing away from the light source."
In other words, you have to imagine the orientation of each plane in the drawing, and color it accordingly -- don't simply, as so many people do, color the sections closer to the light source brighter than the sections farther away from the light source, the way each surface is *facing* is what matters. But that takes a lot of practise to get right admittedly. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

Um. I don't really understand that, but I went ahead and just kind of recolored it.

It's tricky, but think of an object as reflective, as if it were made of a bunch of mirrors (some flat, some bent, all around the object like a skin). The mirrors that are facing directly at the light will be brighter than the mirrors that are not facing the light, because they'd be catching and then reflecting the light that's pointed at them.
So, the idea is, it doesn't matter how close the mirror is to the light, what matters is whether the mirror is facing the light (and will reflect a lot of light), at an angle from it (and will reflect less), or not facing it at all (will be in the shade).
Real objects do actually act like mirrors: what we see when we look at something is what light that object is reflecting.
So, the way you re-colored it is still basically pillow shading except that you moved the center of the pillow to a different place besides the center. It looks better than it was, but it still doesn't work like how light is reflected.
But I don't want to give the impression that I'm an expert on pixel art, I'm pretty bad at it. I'm just talking about the science behind it. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

No, no.
Science is cool.
I'll just try to work out this light thingy with some future sprites. _________________ Look back and you've already lost.

I fear to know what she looks like facing front. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

What's that white dot floating next to her head? I mean aside from "a white dot". _________________ LJ.Art

That's probably the blinking draw cursor that may still linger if you scroll the mouse away fast enough. |

It's clearly the moon.
The minuscule brightness that the moon brings in the darkness of the night represents Pen Girl's own inner strength in overcoming the evils of social influences; thus revealing her beautiful independent mind. |

Komera, you do realize that the cursor has been in every entry thus far, except yours because it wasn't a picture from the editting screen and mine because i editted it out?
That being said, I like TwinHamster's answer. |
