Greetings. As everyone can see, the OHR community is in a pretty stagnant state right now. Even though the engine is still being updated and the developers are still quite active, we rarely see new people posting new games. I don't buy the explanation that everyone is too busy working on games to post, and I want to bring some life back to the engine. My proposal, then, is to restart an OHR magazine along the lines of OHR Monthly. I will take charge, and will host it at superwalrusland.com. My proposal, copy and pasted from my journal for the people who don't read it:

"So I'm thinking of trying to restart an OHR monthly type of site. Would anyone be willing to help? I am open to any ideas or suggestions, but I really want to do this and help revive some interest in the community. Current ideas for pieces: Awful game reviews, previews of upcoming games, reviews of recent releases, contest listings/commentaries/results, comics, commentaries from creators on their own games, retrospectives on OHR classics, and a "Plotscript of the Month" sort of deal. And other uncategorized articles would be great too."

The response on my journal was pretty great. Several people have volunteered to write, Fortis might help with the site design, and Fenrir has said that he will provide his excellent comics that graced the old OHR Monthly. I want this thing to be a success, so I'm asking for any volunteers I can get. Any article related to the OHR would be excellent, even if it's a general game design article that only tangentially relates to the engine (design documents that relate in no possible way aren't really desired, but if they're damn good, I'd take that).

If you want to volunteer to help, reply here or here. If you have any suggestions or ideas, let's discuss them. The following are articles I definitely want in the first issue, which I guarantee will launch March 1st:

Retrospective Review: Wandering Hamster. This is the game that started it all, but there hasn't been a whole lot of discussion on it in a long time. It seems an appropriate topic for the first issue.

Contest Discussion: Here we'll discuss current and upcoming OHR contests. Fenrir's Terrible Games contest starting in April will be discussed, and ideally I'd like to see someone write a brief history of previous Terrible Game contests. A paragraph or two even would be nice, but I don't know a whole lot of the contest's history, so I wouldn't be able to write this.

I would also like to see an overview of the Collaboration Contest. I know that the deadline for games is the end of this month, but a brief rundown of its nature and of the games that have been released already would be cool. In the following month, someone could do mini-reviews for each of the contest games.

Reviews: Any released games can be written on. I am planning on writing a review of Fenrir's Vikings game, but any other reviews are welcome. It doesn't have to be a new, recently released game, but I'd like to get as many of those as possible. I do not want a number scale in the review; too many people look at "8/10" or "B-" and let that speak for itself. I want people to have to read the entire review. We're not basing our reviews on Castle Paradox's rubric.

Previews: Upcoming games will be spotlighted. Authors, send in some screenshots, a description of the game, a title, design information, or any other information you'd like us to know. This section's purpose is to get people excited about upcoming games, and to give newer members a good way to get their game some attention.

Plotscript of the Month: Just as the name says.

Commentaries: If you've released a game and want to give us some insight on it, submit an article talking about its design, history, what worked and what didn't, and anything else you'd like to say. JSH may submit a commentary on his recently released anthology of games. I may repost one of my older ones. I definitely want to see more of these, though.

Awful Game Reviews: Comedy reviews of the worst games the OHR has to offer. I'll write a new one of these as well as including my Dogworld review, but any other writers are welcome to submit some as well. Only terrible, completely unplayable games should fall under this category.

If you would like to volunteer for any of these, or offer to review any other game/write any other article, let's hear it. The old issues of OHR magazines always encouraged me to do more, and I hope that this will encourage new people.

Also, we need a name. I don't really want to call it OHR Monthly again unless there are no other ideas. Thank you, let's make this work.

It's as if this struggling community has suddenly unleashed a burst of awesomeness in order to keep itself alive.

I know that I want to contrbute to this monthly compilation somehow, but I'm not exactly sure yet.

I do know that half of the remaining community will most definitely give everyone some insight into what they've been doing.

One of my biggest fears was finally finishing Detelamane, but having nobody around to play it anymore.

Besides RMZ and The_Dude, No one seemed to be very interested in this anymore. I was afraid that our 5 month's worth of effort would've just been squandered away.

I'm interested in doing the Terrible Game Contest history (probably other things too).

Any idea when the first issue is going to be?

We also need to decide whether or not to do a cover for each month's issue. Some of the old magazines had beautiful covers, but I understand that making something that looks good take a lot of time.

Awesome, it should be a fun read.

I will be posting the first issue March 1st whether there's a lot of content or not. I'm very set on getting this out every month, even if not a lot happens that month.

I've remained interested, but I haven't been following the thread really. I've been waiting for the whole thing to be finished before playing the rest of the games. Would you be interested in writing about the contest for this coming issue?

Funny coincidence that I was just looking at an old issue of Reasonably Septaweekly, and thinking, "How cool is this. Think that a small little DOS code program started this living, breathing community with its own magazine." And of course, that all went down the drain.

I would be interested in writing for this. Possibly a review or anything you really need. There's quite a few OHRRPGCE games that I need to finish/start playing. Why not write a review about them? I definitely think that getting this going again would be a great idea.

i wouldnt say that, just because were the only ones to show are enthusiasm (i know i spelt that wroung) dosnt mean were the only ones to care about it. this already has been one of the most rewarding experiances in my life, or at least in my game making part of it. regaurdless i would be interested into looking into this. im sure i wont be much help it unfortiantly.

I know..It's just that nobody responded to any of the PMs that I sent out and the thread is the only indication of participation that I have. Neutral

In relation to this thread, I plan on patching up my chapter of the collaboration game before the month is over.

As for the cover, I might be able to work something out. I have a pen tablet and Photoshop, which are probably very useful tools for creating a nice looking cover, provided I know what to make it look like.

I think we can throw in my game as a recent release if this is coming out March 1st. Once the playtesters have for the most part played it through and I weed out most of the bugs, then I think it would hopefully be interesting enough. This is assuming we are going to review several released games, maybe three per issue?

An article possibly... but the cover and material for recent game release is more priority.

A good idea would be to collect short snippets of information from previous contest winners about their motivations for their games. This would improve a TGC history significantly, and add more content to the article. I could probably research various facts like who won what, and even when each contest was held if possible.

I thought it was Melnazar that did the comics for OHR-Monthly, not Fenrir? But I don't really remember, it's possible Fenrir did a comic later on? But I'm pretty sure most of them were done by Melnazar.

Komera is still around and did most of the better covers, you could ask her about the new ones too. But she's pretty busy with her baby & art commissions and such, so I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't have time for it.

I don't make Ohrrpgce games anymore (except a few weeks out of every year I work on Wingedmene), so I don't think I have much to contribute to this magazine, but it's a good idea and I hope it works out.

I've no problem with you using the name Ohrrpgce Monthly if you can't think of anything else.

I've already got all that, I went through all the old TGC threads (including Gilbert's and JSH's) for all the basic stuff. When it was, who won, notable entries, what the rules were, I've got all that stuff.

Fenrir did comics for OHR Weekly, I think that's what PHC was thinking of.

I suggest you do some registration through e-mail thingy too. Not everyone visits over here obviously, but I believe some people still care... and those who'd receive the update by e-mail MIGHT come around to discuss the entry... this may get people back, can't be 100% sure, but do as you wish, it is just a suggestion.

Ah; I never actually read OHR Weekly. Is it up anywhere?
