there's a bunch of free programs on the internet in which you can search around yourself. just search mp3 to midi. most of them are horrible however, and don't transfer very nicely. _________________

The only free program I aam aware of that can do this is http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/~araki/amazingmidi/ You actually have to convert from MP3 to WAV first, because it cannot take MP3 directly
it will only work properly if there is ONLY ONE INSTRUMENT in the MP3. One single person playing a simple piano piece will work. ANything more complicated will not work. 99% of the MP3 songs you rip from your CDs or download from wherever have many different instruments, and voices, and just plain won't work when converted to midi.
MP3's are waveform recordings. That means they contain a computerized representations of the actual vibrations in the air that make up the sound.
MIDI is like a page of sheet music, with notes that can be played from a limited selection of standard instruments.
Converting MIDI to MP3 is extremely easy. Just play back the sheet music, and record the results... but to reverse the process you need to be able to analyze the music, recognize the separate instruments (even when they overlap) and write out sheet music. That is hard even for a skilled human composer to do-- no such artificial intelligence exists yet, and even when artificial intelligence gets good enough to do it, there will still be no way to convert sounds that are not similar to any of the standard MIDI instruments |
