I think it's time once again to discuss the good that would come from a General Discussion forum here at CP. Allow me to state some rules for this discussion, first and foremost:
Keep it civil. You don't have to be polite, nice, or anything else, but don't resort to out and out fighting. (For instance, don't just call someone an idiot, back it up with facts. Don't just say "That's bullshit" say "That's bullshit: There's no facts to back that statement up." "Your argument is retarded, because..."
Back up your idea with reason. Don't just say we need it, or don't need it, give reasons why, or perhaps rebutt previous posters reasons. Failure to comply with proper reasoning, and or lack of civillity will result in a request made for the deletion of your posts.
Anyhow, let me state my case, Pros and Cons: Firstly, a General Discussion Forum would bring in new people, AND, it would make sure that new users stay around long enough to get an idea of the forum's real colors, rather than just getting a bad first impression and leaving. Lots of people register here: Very few of them actually wind up posting. A General Discussion forum would give them a learning environment, a wading pool of sorts, to get used to our customs, and to maybe get an idea of what we do.
A lot of games released lately get next to no attention. This is because there's VERY FEW PEOPLE HERE who actually play games anymore. Most of us are too busy with our own projects, or something else to play games, or just don't care anymore. These would be people who have probably never been around game designers before. They'd be impressed, and would give us a view of our work from a different angle.
Same for art and music. Maybe we'd inspire them to be game designers as well.
Yes, there would be work required. Moderators and Admins would have to do their jobs, and enforce rules. A line would have to be established between fun and merrymaking, and flaming and insanity.
In the past, some have argued that there are other forums for general discussion: This logic is flawed. There are other forums for game design, music, art, anime, Furries, Movies, Plotscripting, OHR, and insanity on the internet, and yet CP has forums for all of these and more. Why shouldn't we open up an arm of our site that would do so much, and ask so little of us?
I care what my fellow artists and OHR's think, I'd like to be able to discuss things with them. Current events, shooting the breeze, life. The kind of things PEOPLE talk about. Have fun, and create the kind of bond between me and my fellow CPians that good work relationships are built on. Yes, rivalries would start just as easily, and perhaps feelings would be bent, but so long as things don't escalate out of control, what's the harm in a General Discussion Forum?
I'd even volunteer to write rules and enforce them, if the idea was approved of even on a TRIAL BASIS.
Please respond with your own thoughts. Don't let CP die. |

I second this notion! A lot of people have left and aren't being replaced. We need more members and general discussion could really help with that. _________________ Ssalamanderr's Journal!: http://www.livejournal.com/users/ssalamanderr/

As I recall, last time we brought this up, all the admins were for it except CN. _________________ You got film in my video game!

Sadly I think I joined right after it was shut down.
But it sounds awesome and I'd like to go back up. _________________ The Following Statement is True.

I joined shortly after it shut down... within a month, I think.
I used to be heavily in favor of re-opening PL. Anymore, I don't care. CP has a severe lack of SUAMYG. If that were fixed or if the non-SUAMYGers could be confined to PL, that'd solve 95% of my complaints here. _________________

Ok, I can tell you that me and IM are working on this (a little more complicated than just re-opening the GD board). We're idealistically shooting for Friday to open it up, but just know that something WILL be done this time, and very soon. _________________ You got film in my video game!

Assuming, of course, that IM's ISP dosen't go haywire, right?
EDIT: What we need is something like This. Then, we can let out all our stupidity into one topic. Yes, it would be in a spam forum (if you browse around there, you'll see that). Yes, I countered whoever said that the spam forum would only be used by the nearly-banned. Yes, I'm sorry for the advertisement. No, I am a usergroup moderator at LOME. _________________ A broken clock is still right twice a day. |
