Before I introduce my song, here's some background. Rinku originally wanted me to shit out 12 10 minute songs, which I thought was absurd for an indie game. And all I can really do for 10 minutes, while still keeping a memorable theme, is loop it with variations. And that'll get tiring too. Well needless to say, I'm not going to work under those conditions anymore.
Ok now the song. I stopped it at 7 minutes, deciding it has reached far enough, for such a piece. It's an intense battle theme, with the most instumental articulations I've used to date. There's also a lot of moving orchestration. I think you will be entertained for the whole 7 minutes.
As for why this is my last large piece, I just feel that large orchestral pieces are a bit of a waste. I could make a little flute piece and people would be like AWESOME SOUNDTRACK ;;!!! Then there's a guy who composes the most grandiose orchestral music for xmen3 and you ask someone and they're like "oh, the xmen3 msuci was ok. i didn't even know it had music". It just seems that when the orchestration becomes more dense, people tend to pay less attention to it (people, as in the mass).
I'm not saying I compose for those people, but I do find some truth in more intricate solo pieces. And the advantage of working with such pieces is more intimacy, as well as a chance to develop on melody and harmony.
Well enough with that, get to listening to my last large orchestral piece!

The song wasn't what I would call "intense", but it was entertaining. It sounded more appropriate for a discovery, or as music for a new place being introduced into the story.
Film composers have to be willing to be under the radar most of the time in order to be successful in most cases. I don't call this a waste of time, because the music has a purpose in this format, which is to provide emotion and enhance what was before only video and sound effects. It works for the film, not for itself.
Something I've emulated is john williams' thematic approach. It's a nice middle ground to work in. You are right about one thing. Simplicity is key. _________________ SACRE BLEU!

I shouldn't have used "intense". That term was thrown around from another song I was listening to, and it just soaked into my post. What I had in mind was a tactical theme, which is also fitting for a "discovery".
As for film composing, I have no interests in that industry. I had thought about it, but for now, I am focused on composing songs that I'd like to listen to, and will. That was my original intent in composing anyways. |
