Discuss here, so as not to clutter my contest thread. My own feelings are that their shouldn't be any laws preventing the spread of fanfiction, and that they should be protected in the same way parody is. Of course, publishing this fanfiction in any manner that requires money, should not be, without written permission. Free distribution, I think, is no harm no foul. |

The difference between parody and fanfiction is that in parody, everything has been changed to only slightly resemble the original, so you can't say you're ripping anything off. You're just mocking it. Nothing wrong with that.
In fanfiction, however, you borrow everything from the original, changing nothing. Nobody's making money off fanfiction, though, so anyone who complains about it can stuff it. _________________ Play Horrible Fantasy NOW! |

Well, not everything isn't changed, but usually the names, places, etc. stay the same. _________________ Play Horrible Fantasy NOW! |

Does anyone else think it's fabulously ironic that they'll let you legally mock a copyrighted work, but when you try to honor it and write something in homage of it, it's suddenly against copyright laws?
I'm sorry, but that's just hilarious. |

What's funniest is that the mockeries are usually intended for profit and the honoring works are not! Scary Movie 1, 2 and 3 are nothing but two hour marathons of scenes taken from other movies but with poop added and nobody complains (Like literally there're scenes in SM3 that are just the original scene but with poop in it).
That makes sense though, if you respect something, you have no desire to whore it out for some quick cash, if you hate something and think it deserves to be ridiculed, you obviously have nothing against selling it out like some kind of jive talkin' pimp. _________________ BANDIT REVOLVER, DOWNLOAD IT OR ELSE.

I think that what is being established here is that copyright law is retarded. Yes, I commend Fyre for knowing so friggin' much about it, but the fact of the matter is that copyright laws were intended to protect people's rights to their original works, not to keep the rest of us from enjoying them.
This is not advocacy of piracy, mind you, though it may come off that way. _________________
