Good game stories are always a mix of real life experience and folklore? FF1 seemed to have a lot of celtic stuff, like elves. It also represented, in a cartoony-sort-of-way, the elements, human civilization, and heroism. I think a good story has to combine elements of reality and insanity just to make it appealing.

We cannot really relate on games that have WAY too much "folklore", anyway.

Bu, too much reality would make the game boring.

It could be interesting with reality. If you do a great job at it.

I agree. It's games with stories that have not happened yet, and probably never will, that I like the best. They are interesting. You can experience things that you would otherwise not get the opportunity to experience. And good stories in games are even better than in a book, because one can react with the environment. That being so, the more interactive it is, the more entertaining the story is. Am I right?[/b]

Now that you mention it...... I guess you're right. Too much realistic things in the Sims made it into a big hit.

Leisure Suit Larry (the new one for XBox) also did a good job of this.

Oh yeah. The Sims is totally realistic. Cause you know weekends don't exist and I pay my refrigerator to give me food, of which it keeps itself fully stocked at all times.

Also The Sims doesn't apply to this because it doesn't have any story aside from what the player makes up.

I don't think so. It doesn't necessarily need "insanity" or fantasy or anything like that. I would say that the amount of insanity a story needs to be interesting is inversely proportional to how talented the writer is. A good writer can make a battle with a dragon sound interesting, but only a GREAT writer can make a trip to the store sound interesting. You have to be able to create characters that are interesting enough that people would want to read about their trip to the store. It's hard, but I am confident that it can be done.

This isn't to say that a talented writer shouldn't use insanity. Quite the opposite, their insane stories would also be much more entertaining than those of bad writers. Just like their sane ones. The point is just that a good story doesn't necessarily need any insanity. What it needs is a good writer.

i think that good games are ones which have a compelling storyline and characters that you can really relate to (in RPGs anyway). You have to care what happens to the characters after all!

I've cared more for the Guilty Gear X2 characters than most RPGs. Then again, most RPGs have very similar characters.
