I have a feeling I've posted this a year ago, but I'm not sure. I'll just repost it again. Kale asked advice for animating water via PM a while ago and since I figured there are others who would benefit from this, I'm replying it here.

http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/digifami/digiweb/dot_teck/3nen/3_03.html

It's not my style so to speak, but it's a good example. There are other animation tutorial as well, from animating NPCs to attack animations tutorial there. (and maptiling among other things.)

It's in Japanese, but who cares? We just need to look at the examples anyway.

If the graphics look familiar, yes, it's a pixelation guide that came with RPGmaker. You might hate RPGmaker, but they're professionals artists, they know their stuff.

that fact that it's in japenese is really anoying. It just makes it really hard to get the point of what they're trying to say.

That tutorial still has some amazing graphics to work off though. The text would be helpful, but the pictures are what's really important.

I just finished a colorselector module for GIMP.
Restricting my colors to only Amiga, Genesis, or CPC compatible ones forces me to use more interesting color gradients. This module makes that quick, by providing color selection directly from those color spaces:

If color choice is important to you in your art, i recommend it.
I also used it (with the 'Amiga' colorspace) to make a new master palette, it is great for that too.

It didn't bother me that it was Japanese, I could still figure out what it was saying.

Anyone else have some good tutorials? I for one, could stand all the advice and helpful hints you people are willing to give.

EDIT: Whatever you do, do NOT try to access the Pixelation forums. I think they've been hacked again, as it goes to a completely different site, and then it tries to download about a hundred weird things onto your computer. I've been fucking around with my spyware program trying to stop it for about half an hour, and it's finally quit spawning weird programs in directories on my C Drive. Just be careful.

it got hacked again!?

damn, that site was a pretty good for trying to learn better ways to pixel. oh well.

EDIT: http://www.pixelation.cjb.net/

theres three different sites there. i think a lot of the people from pixelation created their own boards or just migrated to these.

All I see is a puppet on the right, and some links. And then my Spyware thingy goes nuts, telling me about registry changes, and .exe files the site's trying to download. IT's got some buttons, but I can't hit them, I don't think.

EDIT: Apologies. I may've been mistaken. There's a popup that maybe I accidentally hit, because this time I didn't get all the requests for a .exe. Proceeding to these forums with caution, are there any other resources which come to mind?

The best of the current 'pixelation-replacements':

http://forum.ptoing.net/index.php

EDIT:
And it's down.

http://pixel-arts.org/pixelopolis/
is up now, some mutation of it will become the next gen Pixelation.

Decided to add this link because it contains a very useful tutorial on how to reduce or eliminate a "grid" appearance to maptiles.

I'm pretty sure that the clouds opened up and he ascended directly into pixel-artist-heaven on a pixelated fiery chariot.

Guess what, dewds? The currently posted mirror to Tsugumo's tutorials isn't the most recent; there are two new chapters!
Try this mirror instead:
