Just like the subject, do you want more people to download your game? Well, here's your answer.

*Read this next part if you want to know why I made this thread, otherwise skip it.*

I was looking around the Hamster Republic game list when I noticed that many people made the download of their games link directly to their game display page here. Well the thing that pissed me off was the fact that nearly all the download links were like that, this got me so annoyed that I decided to create a thread.

*This is how you get more downloads*

Make the "link" actually link to the .zip file.

"But I can't learn this darn coding!" some of you may be thinking, well think no more!

Let's take your standard link...

http://www.castleparadox.com/forum/gamelist-display.php?game=666

(This link will not work until someone actually makes game #666.)

This is a link that will take you to the game number 666's display page (the page that tells you about the games and it's reviews)

to make the link a download link alter it so...

http://www.castleparadox.com/forum/download.php?game=666

What's the difference? you change "gamelist-display" to "download".

forget I talked about the second way.

I think if you do it like that, then it'll count as hit, even if they cancel instead of downloading. It's kinda misleading; the "old-fashion" way will give them the game's information and your hits mean somebody cares about your game, not tricked into clicking on it.

Agreed with Machu; don't link directly to your zip unless you're a cheater. :p

What is the point anyway? It's not going to give you more downloads. People just follow the link to the page and download it from there if they still want to.

who cares how many downloads you have made with your game!

what really matters is that people ENJOY your game!
do you want a crappy game with a huge download number, or a great game with not as much download numbers?

honestly, great games will stand out more because people would recommend it to others, and if the others enjoyed, they'd recommend it to others as well...

But, shouldn't the download link actually be the download link? I mean, there's a place to put a discription of your game, I don't mean to be talking about cheating, I'm trying to talk about convinience.

Yeah, I agree w/ Flamer.
The number on the download count will tempt everyone to download. But they'll be disappointed when they find out that it's nothing but crap.

What? What's this about a download count? I'm just talking about linking your .zip file to the hamster republic game page.

TwinHamster has a point. But I think either-or would be ok.

This is just my opinion, but I don't believe that it is, in any way, cheating. The only mode of cheating that I can think of as far as download count goes, is if you actually spend hours downloading your own game just to boost the count. I don't think there's anything wrong with using a CP Download link for your game.

Personally, I've clicked on links to see the games information, and judge whether or not to download from what is said there. There has been a few times when I clicked on links the way TwinHamster is talking about, and I cancel the download because I just wanted to see the info.

However, I guess it's okay to do this on the Hamster Republic list.

I believe Twin Hamster did this because of what Shadowiii did with like three of his games there. Personally, I think it's cheating. I mean, you can't write too much at Hamster Republic so it's nice being able to read even more about a game before you download it. But with some games like FFH you don't really need to read it.

It's crazy to call this cheating. It isn't cheating, the only reason you would call it so is because of the title of this thread, and the first line of the first post. This thread is one of the most terribly mis-named threads I've seen.
