Shining Force
First tactical RPG. Although the story is bland and the graphics arn't the best, Shining Force set the path for other tactical RPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, and Fire Emblem (Yes, Shining Force came first, so in a way Fire Emblem is a rip off of Shining Force) You also get 12 characters to go into battle with you, a lot more than other tactical RPGs. There is no armor in Shining Force, but you do get "stat up" items, and special rings that increase your stats.
Another good one... Warcraft III
I'm a fan of tactic games.... obviously. I liked the story, the cut scenes between battles. I played the games before it, and its a huge improvement from the others. The heros added to the game also added a nice touch. I just hated the "timer" battles. You had to stay alive for an hour while the enemy had infinite money and other resources, and they gave you crap...
For a bad game... Quest 64.
No money, the story is bad for an RPG made in its time, and the overall battle system is just bad. If the story was better, or if the game wasn't rushed, it would have been worth my time. I think this fits into the worst RPG of all time.
Another bad one is Shining Soul
Diablo rip off that was so hard to complete if you soloed. You basically had to play with a friend to beat the game.

Zuh?! I thought Fire Emblem was a NES game, and Shining Force was Genesis... Ah, just checked real quick; Fire Emblem says it's copyright 1990, and Shining Force is 1993. You lose!

Also, RMZ: It's just Kirby Superstar. (I agree about its greatness, though) |

Shining Force was released on the Sega Mega Drive on 20 March 1992; I think it was the first Sega system.
I'm not sure about the rest of this...
Sega Mega Drive was realesed near the same time as NES, but NES was more popular. I don't even think it made it to the states. With the release of the genesis, Shining Force was brought to the USA in 1993.
So, Fire Emblem was released before Shining Force. So I guess I lost whatever I was competeing for? |

| Master System was the first Sega system. It pre-dated the NES by a few years, I think. |

| Speaking of Sega CD, has anyone mentioned Bomberman yet? There was a version of Bomberman for the Sega CD that allowed for up to 8 players at the same time with the right adapters. I had that in my college apartment, and it would take 15 minutes for people who never played video games, or self-professed video game haters to get sucked in. They'd be frantically mashing buttons and screaming at the screen in no time. Christ, that game is awesome. |
