N' a Merry Christmas to you as well, Setu, and everyone else.

Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, it's still a wishing for "happy holidays." Christmas isn't the only one, quite obviously. So I suppose I'll say Happy Holidays to everyone else.

Pardon the pessimist-wannabe-sociologist-psychologist viewpoint, but as I see it, Christmas for the most part has ceased to be a Christian holiday. Most people in the US celebrate it, some aren't Christian, some are. The Christian ones just include the whole Jesus thing in their celebrations, while the nonchristians might just stick with Santa Clause, who actually is an alternate form of the Norse god Odin, if you didn't know.

I'd guess that'd make me an enemy of Santa, considering my namesake and all. Half the holiday is taken from the Norse to begin with, so frankly it doesn't surprize me that big ol' beardy-head (Elmyra/Tinytoons reference) managed to sneak into the celebration in one form or another. All the same, seasons greetings and all to everyone. And good luck with the Human Day contest for all who entered.

Isn't santa derived from St. Nickalaus (sp)? I heard that the actual term "santa clause" came from children who couldn't quite pronounce the saint's name correctly (santa clause is pretty close to St. Nickalaus). This also explains why people often refer to him as St. Nick.

Well, that's another part of Santa. You see, he's basically a conglomeration of characters from several religions. His gift-giving/children-loving part obviously is from St. Nicholas, but a lot of other stuff is from Odin. For example, both of them were bearded. The Norse gods often flew around in the sky in sleighs pulled by flying mammals. And, this one's interesting, Odin had one eye, and, if you look, most pictures of Santa protray him winking at you. Christmas is such a great holiday . . . it's like the uber-hybrid holiday nowadays.

Merry Christmas Shadowiii! Merry Christmas Setu! Happy holidays!

Isn't 'Santa' 'saint' and 'Claus' short for nickclaus? Just wondering.

the name santa claus detrived from Sintar Klaus, which is Danish (I think). I'm wouldn't worry too much anyway... it's all hundreds of years ago when this happened. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone at Cp a merry christmas or happy holidays or whatever else.

HAB! BUMHUG!

I seriously have no idea why everyone is trying to start a debate on where the name Santa Claus comes from.

Oh, and Sinter Klass and Santa Claus deliver to happy Holland living people. Both, two different days, I believe.
