Ya know what, man? Even if you keep the OHR battle system, as long as you keep the nostalgic DW feel, I'll love ya man! Big grin

I was gonna make a DW remake called DQX, but I didn't want to make any towns, so I quit and started to make Urbanos Fantasos. It's a good idea.

I actually liked this game when it was new, despite being glitchy and kinda ugly. Fan-made remakes in game making engines tend to be like that, living off the popularity of the name. Like how Moogle's worst game (to my knowledge and by The Wobbler's claims) is his Super Mario Bros one.

And now I went and made myself feel bad about my multiple failed attempts to outdo Fenrir in terms of faithfulness to the source in making my own Final Fantasy 1 remake.

My advice to aspiring games remaker fans: Don't remake, take inspiration. Even if "inspiration" means "complete ripoff", just make your own thing and only copy the parts you're not creative enough to come up with on your own rather than trying to faithfully remake the whole thing. A faithful remake will only highlight the things you couldn't emulate, while a less faithful one will only look glaringly out of place to those familiar with and fond of the original.

Myself, Woodus, and Wonderslime from Dragon's den made an RPGmaker remake of Dragon Warrior several years ago. It was schmancy and between three people our skills propped up one another will. It may still be up at his site, I haven't been there in ages. I post here more, and so that show's I am not very active in message boards. It is still up!!! http://www.woodus.com/den/resources/rm2kdw1remix.php

You can't get me to touch RPG Maker with a stick now that I know the OHRRPGCE so well.

Why would you remake an existing game if you could design a completely new and better one.

That is actually a kind of interesting question--

But I think the answer is something like: "why re-watch a favorite movie instead of going to see something new?"

I think that the creative process doesn't always need to be purely creative. Sometimes it can be enjoyable to re-create something that already exists.

Another analogy I can think of is when people do historical re-enactments. By definition they are not making something new, but instead they are finding a way to re-live something old in a way that feels more personal than just simply remembering it.

Also, tracing is a legitimate form of artistic practice. You can learn a lot about game design by trying to recreate familiar game elements yourself.
