Has anyone considered trying to convert the wiki into a downloadable .pdf?

I realize that the nature of the wiki might preclude that, but it might useful for somethings that are more or less static OR, make the whole document, with a stern highlighted, italicized & Bold warning that this is meant as a reference and that the wiki should be dbl checked for clarity/corrections. My reasoning behind this is that I work on my game on a laptop, and I don't always have a 'net connex. I would imagine that I'm not the only one.

At any, ty so much for a fun tool. Makes me breakout the ol' NES and the FF/DW series.

I second this motion, the computer I use to make my games almost NEVER has internet, I have to use a USB to transfer finished games...

EDIT: And a PDF would be useful in the case of the Wiki going temporarily down.

Not a pdf, but I used to make a static html copy of the wiki every night using httrack. It could be unpacked in a folder on ones hard drive and viewed with no internet connection.

That is vastly better than a pdf because all the internal links still work.

I think an offline copy of either the whole wiki , or at least the HOWTO and other core documentation, would be great. I'm frequently without an internet connection too.

The httrack mirror worked fairly well, didn't it? Or did it have a high maintenance burden?

I am actually still using it to update http://mirror.motherhamster.org/wiki/

I just abandoned it for http://HamsterRepublic.com/ohrrpgce/ because it wasn't reliable enough-- and that unreliability was mainly the fault of my web host. They have my memory usage throttles, and when php scripts exceed the limits they got killed unceremoniously. If httrack was the only thing accessing the wiki, everything went fine, but if httrack was working at the same time as a search engine spider (googlebot, msnbot, baiduspider, etc) decided to pummel me, the mirrored copy would end up full of blank pages :(

I think my isp's memory limits have been relaxed slightly since then, but I don't have any good way of testing that.

But I could look into having the mirror upload script leave the tarball of the mirrored wiki somewhere accessible for download.

Tried out httrack. Worked very well, but I dl'd the printable version which weighed in at just over 1 gb. Offline website works just fine. On the offhand.. I inadvertently used castle paradox.. NO idea why.. several hours later, I was wondering "WTH?" 3.2 gb of data.. over like 6 hrs.. *DOH* (not a slow connex, slow xfer rate from the server). TY for the suggestion! Happy

The hardest thing about using httrack is stopping it from downloading extra stuff that it doesn't really need to download. My mirror of the wiki takes up 76 megabytes.

Here are the arguments I use to expclude and include specific stuff.

Code:

httrack --quiet --extended-parsing=YES \
  "${URL}" \
  +"*hamsterrepublic*.gif" \
  +"*hamsterrepublic*.png" \
  +"*hamsterrepublic*.jpg" \
  +"*hamsterrepublic*.jpeg" \
  -"*hamsterrepublic.com/bobcomic*" \
  -"*.hamsterrepublic.com/albums*" \
  -"*gilgamesh.hamsterrepublic.com*" \
  -"*thehamsterwheel.net*" \
  -"*Special:*" \
  +"*Special:Categories*" \
  -"*Special:Categories&article=*" \
  -"*Special:Userlogin*" \
  -"*action=*" \
  -"*diff=*" \
  -"*&limit*" \
  -"*&hide*" \
  -"*&printable=*" \
  -"*&wpDestFile=*" \
  -"*oldid=*" \
  -"*&until=*" \
  -"*&from=*" \
  -"*&redirect=no*" \
  -"*pagefrom=*" \
  -"*pageuntil=*" \
  +"*&action=raw&gen=js" \
  +"*&action=raw&gen=css" \
  +"*MediaWiki:Common.css&*" \
  +"*MediaWiki:Monobook.css&*" \
  +"*gen=css*" \
  +"*/favicon.ico" \
  > httrack.out 2>&1

I just updated http://mirror.motherhamster.org/ so you can download a tarball containing the mirror of the wiki for offline viewing. it is pretty close to 20 megabytes to download.

Not worried about the file size, 1 gb is practically nothing nowadays. Having it available offline has made it easier to reference. Once again, TY for the tool and ty for the suggestion regarding httrack.
