I'm a little curious -

Has anyone ever heard of the OHRRPGCE being used for a commercial purpose?

I realize that most of us here are in it for the fun (like me), but I remember in the FAQ that you can sell your games.
Anyways, I can't help but wonder if this has happened.

I would also imagine that you could use a game to advertise yourself in the game-making industry. Has anyone done this?

The only game I know that went commercial so far was Fat Frog RPG. A very bad game, too.

And BlastedEarth plans to go commercial with his game and I think Pepsi Ranger wants to do it too if I understood him correctly.

There are only very few games I'd actually pay for, but those won't get official. I think it's also because if you make a game because you enjoy it, the game ends up much better than if you make a game because you need the money.
On the other hand however, earning / needing money from a game helps you to not lose motivation as fast. Keeping motivation is basically the biggest task in indie free RPG Maker game development.

Yeah, man.

I agree completely.
I really enjoyed Walthros, and I can't imagine that game being sold ever ... anywhere.

Game making is like any other art.
The best stuff is made because the maker thinks it's worth making. The trick is having the time, motivation, and money. I miss being a teenager. Those guys have all the time in the world.
Hey, teenagers! Don't spend all your time on playing video games like I did!

I have way too much stuff to do.
School, symphony, my comic book, my game, and other assorted projects.
Days should be twice as long. Then I'll get everything done. I'll send a feature request to God.

I am most certainly not trying to sell my game(s).

About going commercial: What I'm doing is taking the basis of my story lines, re-telling them, and am trying to go commercial with them as novels. Powerstick Man in particular is a slightly different case in that his story began as a comic, not as a game, and that the novel will actually have a different title than either comic or game. The other difference is that he's rarely called Powerstick Man in the novel(s), but is narrated from the point of view of his alter ego, Jimmy Knightly. And the story itself is a little different than it is in the game. In fact, the game's purpose in the last year has been to canvas potential locations for the books. The story in general has taken a new path to the old goal.

But that's what I'm doing. I'm not trying to sell the games. I don't have the rights to do that, thanks to the music, nor do I have the desire to try even if I did acquire the rights. For me, this is all about creative outlet, skill building (plotscripts keep my mind thinking about math every once in awhile) and scenery development for better descriptive details. Not about commercialism.

Just wanted to make that clear.

I once asked James about this.
He'd only heard of a game called "Fat Frog RPG" going commercial.
So there's that and the Games of the Hamster Republic CD.

Really now, the OHR community is almost never faced with people who want to make any sort of money, even if they could do so without lifting a finger. I think it's appropriate; some of the best games I've ever played were freeware. Cave Story, the powder game, Wandering Hamster, Okedoke (if darkblubber reads this, get back to work), FlapFlapFlap, and lots of others from indie game communities.

When Vikings of Midgard is completed, I'd like to produce a limited run of CDs full of music, artwork, and designer notes with the game to sell at conventions and the like. I wouldn't actually be charging for the game as such - but I could see people paying for what essentially would be an art compilation.

Also, Sword of Jade DID take development contributions, so theoretically, I PAID for SoJ.

If we ever get the OHRRPGCE development process far enough along to port to mobile platforms like iPhone or Android, I can see people finding a market for games there. I would also love to try a Wii port too.

If I payed 8 bucks for that newbieish* "Final Fantasy IV: the After Years", then there have got to be people out there willing to pay something for OHR games :)

* (grumble, grumble, ripped music, ripped enemy sprites, ripped maps...)

I was considering buying TMC an Xbox and a XNA Creators Club account so he could port the OHR to XNA and other people with XNA Creators Club accounts could sell their games on Xbox Live.

However, this kind of fell apart when I couldn't even figure out if I could buy a XNACC account for New Zealand..

I completely agree with Bagne. All games, in my opinion should be considered a work of art, and should be treated as such. I just got the image of Boundless Ocean hanging next to the Mona Lisa. Ha ha ha! I'm such a nerd... Cool

I do want to sell my game but im losing interest in its commercial side as i showed it to some friends and they thought nobody would pay to play old looking games unless they were fans of the nes or the gba and unknown gamemakers... but im still finishing it because i really love the saga series and if i couldnt be in square to continue it i might as well make my own^^

This is, sadly, true. I've met many a gamer that bases everything about a game on its graphics and presentation.
One day I was playing Battle for Wesnoth (a very well-done and respectable indie Strategy game) in the local library and this fellow comes out of nowhere and says something along the lines of "I would never play that, it's too cartoony."
Well excuuuse me for not shelling out my time and money on the latest Call of Duty.

Lots of people pay money for old-looking games... as long as they run on a cell phone.

Someday, someday >:)
