| Quote: | | Whoa whoa whoa! What's with the Zork bashing? They both might be text-based, but Nethack and Zork are two totally different things. And, like Nethack, Zork-style text adventures are still alive and well today, created by a fan-community. Check out http://ifarchive.org and http://wurb.com/if/. | I am trying to beat it into JARS' head that Nethack =/= Zork, and I am sorry. I did not mean to bash Zork, but if he has to bash Rogue-like games because they remind him of out-dated versions of BASIC, then I have to kick his ass for ignoring the gamer's plea for gameplay over graphics. I am sorry. |

Which is what I'e been striving for since forever, writing about a dozen articles concerning the very progression of nowadays' games towards 3d movies rather than a gaming experience which is how I've managed to defend 2d over 3d so far, but your point is good in that I've been neglecting the roots behind 2d: ascii games... lol I wasn't expecting to be served the lesson I've served to other but meh, that's a good humility test.
And since you guys seem to have this game so much at heart, why do you bother making graphical games? |

What? Just because they like old fashioned games, they aren't allowed to enjoy newer old fashioned games? |

If you have the need to make such arguments, why NOT at least try out a Rogue-like?
I mean, they DID make graphics for Nethack, because they can, and they did, but gameplay took priority.
The basic premise of Rogue was probably more than just gameplay over graphics. I believe the idea was for a game that people could play and enjoy on just about any kind of computer.
Nethack took Rogue and turned it into a beast of a game, WITHOUT improving graphics. Instead, they focused only on the gameplay. Imagine a Final Fantasy sequel that had the same graphics as before, but with far improved depth and gameplay factor. That is what Nethack did.
And that's not the end of it. Like I said, Nethack even comes with a sprite pack for you to use (heck, *I* use it because it helps me differentiate between the icons), and I think I have even found some sound add-ons for it.
There is absolutely no reason for you to not try Nethack. Once you try it, the reason you would be driven away is not because it's a silly text game, but because of the daunting difficulty and amount of commands (nearly every key does something). |

It's not so much of an oxymoron as you might think it to be. |

Point taken. Now can this argument cease? |

I only just wanted to trigger a debate on the topic, not that I think all text games suck, several are good indeed. I wasn't expecting to be the only one arguing for something I don't really believe in |
