Hmmm... I'd rather stick on creating my own game, at least I can tell everyone that my work is done originally by me. I'm not promising but, I'll try to volunteer and share some resources here at CP when necessary. Razz

Oh, I had forgotten that we'd never gotten round to doing that. Add a "Create new game from template" option in addition to "Create new game", choose a template from a menu if custom finds more than 1 .new file in it's directory, or require the user to browse for a template?

The only problem with outlines would be that there would be a downfall in individual spriting styles. Imagine every new game having its walkabouts in the FF model.

I suppose that a sprite-sheet resource would be very convinient, but the idea that every new guy is going to have similar looking games troubles me. And what about enemy graphics and other things that can't have outlines made for them? There would be a great inconsistency between out of battle and in battle.

Although, I can agree that these outlines should be used to learn how to make pixel art, I really don't think that games consisting completely of altered outlines shouldn't be submitted. I mean, if I were to extract the outline from a FF6 walkabout and simply color that in. Would it be acceptable? "I didn't rip the entire graphic! I just took the body, head, and eyes, and some of the hair!"

And how would we rate graphics made from the outlines?
"Oh, the standard male-walkabout was colored in! And it looks pretty, because, well why wouldn't it?!"

What I'm trying to say is that these "sprite pools" shouldn't be used to make games; instead, they should only be used as a type of tutorial program.[/babble]

What? No, I think your idea sounds great Happy .
I just don't want to see every game after the sprite pool is made to have the exact same walkabouts.

I think a set of sprite templates is a fantastic idea. They will really help inexperienced users get started with spriting, and it isn't as if anybody wll be *forced* to use them.

I do not fear the hypothetical day in the future when Orchard is publicly flogged for blaspheming the holy perfection of OHR walkabout sprite sheet #1 by daring to create his own unique sprites... for I believe that day will never come.

And I do look forward to the hypothetical day in which newbie games consist of kinda-decent-looking semi-original graphics based on templates, rather than arfenhouse-esque scribbles and SNES rips.

My favorite thing about the idea to provide templates as outlines is that it provides tools for new game authors to learn to sprite for themselves. That solution simultaneously fills the demand for a sprite library, while still keeping with the OHR's tradition of do-it-yourself graphics.

I am amazed that James Paige supports the idea.

The reason I didn't want to debate is because you shot me down with the enemy issue and the fact that it could encourage ripping anyway. I just thought some blobs that look like human outlines you see on the ground of crime scenes would be adequate, but I guess that still promotes sameness, especially for walkabouts (which don't even have to copy FF's style, by the way. They're blobs!)

Besides. I never think that they would be the same. Like... You think they're all going to be FF style if we have the outlines, but don't make them that kind of pose. OHR sprites are far larger than FF's. FF4's battle sprites are bunched up characters with fists raised and huge heads. OHR's sprites can have much more natural proportions, and we can create a blob of that. Boom. It's not FF's style anymore. Plus you have the 20x20 Walkabouts, so that can be a little more proportionate (IE: Have the same size head, just make the body around it bigger).

Plus, you can just not draw the eyes in the outline templates. Make them draw the eyes themselves. What if they end up drawing big cartoony eyes? That definately isn't FF style.

As for enemies. Just give them a few to work with, then let their imaginations run as soon as they get better at pixeling and working with the templates.

Of course there's even an easy solution to this. Rather than make just one set of sprites, make several. Each featuring a different style. That way the new person who wants to use the full size of a hero sprite can, and another new person who doesn't want to take up the entire sprite can do that as well.

No matter what it promotes, it's up to the game designer to choose to use copied graphics in a serious project or not. The ones who will (meaning those who disregard the value of originality) are probably not as respectable, and probably not worth the download time either. If all the games start looking the same, then it's just that easier to spot fakers.

Well… I suppose I could always do weapons. I mean, I happen to have the internet at my fingertips, I could find an enormous arsenal of weaponry and draw it.

In fact, I don't even have to use the internet — I have a book with many medieval weapons and stuff (bows, arrows, spears, maces, ball-and-chains, scythes — you name it). And of course, there's the generic pistol-type gun, the bazooka and the missile-launcher for more modern-type weapons.

So what do 'ya think — maybe I could help out here (at least with the medieval weapons)? :D

I'm sure other peopel replied with this, but I'll repeat it as it is my opinion. I will not contribute to make generic resource files. The whole point why I came back to OHRRPGCE is because it forced the users into doing everything on their own as much as possible rather than ripping things from other game. Songs and graphics are not only "pretty" they have an emotional attachment to the gaming experience. They are tailored, they value originality. The very reason why OHRRPGCE makes so many GOOD games is because it forces us people out of our usual laziness and do the best we can. Sure, sometimes some games will have NO music, or crappy graphics, but among them, there will be the occasionnal pearl, one that I haven't seen anywhere around other engines. Point is, I'm against ripping, and I'm against people who want resource files. People who ask for this end up making crappy games anyway but with graphics and music from other people. All they focus on is the core, and the core is intimatly tied with everything else. If you fail to comprehend that, sorry, but you suck at game design and development. So, not only will I not contribute, but I will actively argue against it. You may find several of my articles concerning this matter on several communities,such as Exyled.net (which has probably closed into timecircuits), Stationz, DemonArts, rpg2knet, etc. I've argued this over at SEVERAL places and I couldn't stress the importance of CUSTOM enough. Even if its not as esthetically appealing, it will always do your project more justice. And I know for a fact several skilled makers around here agree with my point. Experience teaches you that good games are made with original stuff. Even if it sucks.
Pissed off!

EDIT: You are alwso proving your inability to work with someone else. Better than stealing resources, is teaming up with one or two people who can cover your weaknesses, people you will actually discuss with about the project rather than enforce your views. Stop being a newbie, and focus on social interactions, your game will benefit from that too.

Why is this pissing you off so much? I fail to understand why people seem to want to dictate how others should use a free program. So what if not everything created with the OHR is a masterpiece? Maybe someone just wants to make a goofy game for their friends. Besides, we've seen genuinely good games made with ripped graphics (FFH, anyone?).
