| The movies are awful, but I don't see how anyone who's played RPGs for years couldn't find the game funny. |

So we're agreed: This topic is now about Arfenhouse? Jeez, let's at least try to keep it on topic.
I don't really mind the jokiness of it, for the most part. The bits about Bush are annoying, just because that joke's sort of played out already, and we've got 2 years of the guy left. The secret bosses in the tunnel's use of profanity is also indicative of the attitude of the game. They're all "ZOMG, I WANT THE COCKS, THE COCKS, OOH I WANT THE CUNTS, THE CUNTS!" but it's not even really in a way that's frightening, threatening, or good use of profanity. It's like you're just doing it to try to push the limit. "ZOMG COCKS" is a good attitude to have most of the time, but it just doesn't seem consistent here.
The "Daryl's water is really piss and shit!" joke wasn't really all that funny.
The difficulty curve is still really steep, I had to level up for a long time before I could go from one dungeon to the next, and then again before facing a boss.
I didn't realize that most of the stuff was inside references that your group of friends would understand, and knowing that, a lot of the seeming holes in the plot could be fixed with just a little bit more fleshing out of the characters. |

Well, in conclusion the game is not a good game, and I think I should apologize to JSH and Moogle. A helpful member who I would like to call a friend has pointed out how you two really wanted to see your games a bookclub entry, and I've gone and sort of slashed that hope. I still have much to learn, and I'm sorry that I went out with heavy advertisement on a game that didn't live up to the hype I was presenting. It seems that this is Xerian all over again. o_o _________________ http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=750 Bloodlust Demo 1.00

| It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't the great game you'd have liked it to be. It had it's problems, but so do all games. Personally, with the lame jokes and steep difficulty curve aside, it was overall a pretty enjoyable game. Keep up the good work. |

I'll give you three good reasons why you shouldn't make that apology:
* I'm certain you learned a lot from this discussion. Even if you made a bad game, your skills should have improved in the process and this discussion will help you refine that if you apply what's been said.
* Everyone should want his game to be talked about. If, when it is released, you are not more excited about your game than about any other game, you have not put enough heart into your project.
* Finally, I don't want an apology. I'd like Darkmoor to be talked about, but not as a mere ego booster: I think battles are ultimately an overlooked part of RPGs in general and particularly OHRRPGs. I would hope a closer analysis of DD would inspire authors to put more thought into their battles, which would lead to games that I would like to play more. If this isn't the month for DD or TQ, I'm sure their time will come.
* Okay, four reasons: no one likes self-pity. _________________

| Yeah, you don't need to apologize. Regardless of the game's quality, I still had a good time discussing it. And I don't think I ever begged for TQ to be discussed either. I'm sure we'll get around to it eventually, and I'm actually 50/50 on looking forward to it. |

I wasn't apologizing because I felt sorry for myself, I was apologizing for the basic reasons I already mentioned. If it's cool with you guys, then never mind the apology :p _________________ http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=750 Bloodlust Demo 1.00

I think the discussion brought up some questions about broader trends in our gaming communitiy, so it was worth talking about. Besides, I don't mind straying a little from the original topic as long as it's congruous.
So, with that said, I'd like to reiterate my question, since I was only using Arfenhouse as an example and I think we got too specific to that game to really answer what I was talking about. How does one make a game with parody battles and still make the battles fun? |
