Not that anyone asked, but I didn't place a vote on the game. I bothered looking at it for about five seconds while I tried to figure out what PHC wanted me to do with it.
But yeah, ditto on the no-rating-unreleased-games motion. _________________

Added it within minutes of PHC's suggestion.
I'll consider adding the ability to see who's voted....although I'll probably restrict that info to the game owner, haven't really decided yet. I won't be linking usernames to user ratings though. Doing so discourages users from rating games as the anonymity of it all is removed. Therefore, don't expect to see any user names until a minimum number of ratings have been placed, thereby removing the ability to pinpoint who voted what. _________________

Bug report: check out Sword of Jade -- it has 10 ratings, and I haven't yet rated it, but for some reason its rating box doesn't seem to appear. Is it set up so that once a game gets 10 ratings it no longer accepts ratings, or what? Where the box would be is just an empty spot for me, it doesn't have a number or the word 'rating' or anything.

Oh I see, you can no longer rate games that don't have a file to download.
However, SoJ does have a file to download, which it links to. I think you should allow ratings for all games which have a file to download even if that file is not hosted on CP. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

I had noticed this problem as well. To fix this, I suggest we allow ratings on games listed as "demo" or "final version," while not allowing ratings on games listed as "in production." This way games that are not released still cannot be rated, and games that are released can be rated whether they're hosted here or somewhere else. _________________ Locked

| Or maybe these games could upload a zip file with a .txt saying "The game can be found so and so, vote for me" |

I did a combination of the two, really.
If a game has a download, it can be rated. If a game is a demo or final, it can be rated. Otherwise, it cannot. _________________

I think there's a bug in the rating averaging math.
SoJ had 10 ratings, with a 3.90 average.
I gave it a 5.
SoJ now has 11 ratings, with a 3.91 average.
Call me crazy, but it seems like that change was way too small.
Example:
10*3.90 = 39
11*3.91 = 43.01
It treated my rating as it it were a 4 (increase from 39 to 43) rather than a 5. I.e. the new rating should have been 44/11, or 4.00. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

I just checked and the math is definitely correct. The total sum of all SoJ:PD reviews is 43, as you suggested. Perhaps someone changed their grade by a factor of 1 or you misread the total when it was really 3.8 prior to your contribution. _________________

Well, isn't it easy to copy the same basic idea from the Song rating system and use it here? I think so, and IM most likely did that. Should be flawless, because the Song rating system works like a charm.
Someone is probably giving the game a lower rating than it obviously has earned. Like say, some guest gives the game a 1 because he couldn't figure out how to open it or something stupid like that. A 5 would take the average up to around a 3 ish. Personally, I think, if people want to be immature and give undeserving games higher or lower ratings than the games deserve, it would be futile to try and govern them. After all, don't they have that right? _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

| I don't like this talk about how a game "deserves" a higher rating. A game gets what it gets, and if someone really liked it 0 or 1 points worth, that's just the name of the game. Sure, we could do things like strike out the highest and lowest vote, or cancel out votes that don't seem fair, but all that would do in the long run, is create a system by which perceived greatness is better than real greatness, and people are afraid to voice any opinion against the grain. I think the system we have is fine, and should be kept. |
