Better yet:

Stop worrying about all this crap and just design the game. If it's good, it's good. Concentrate on one element if that's all you have the potential to do, or whatever. Don't debate what section is 'the most important'- let your game determine that.

That doesn't make any sense.

And besides, this is one of the few good threads there are right now, and a worthy discussion topic.

1: As was pointed out by JSH in his review of FFH, the sole reason you play through the beginning of the game is because of the graphics. If the opening scenes of a game have wonderful visuals, there's a chance people will keep playing through the rest.

That's interesting, because I said something almost exactly the same in an article on game design (as to the REAL purpose of graphics in OHR games).

Let me be frank: OHR Stories tend to suck. I'm sorry to say this but hey, they usually really really are dull. They aren't worth reading, the twists are either predictable or nonexistant, and the dialogue 99% of the time is either fluff or some hard-core expination of every move your guy makes. It's lousy.

Same goes for music. It's usually ripped. Though there is one thing that saves OHR-games: really good battle music. Even if ripped, if it is catchy then I'll keep playing it (the original Partisan Legacy battle music for instance). But 99% of the time music is bad, poorly placed, and offers no benfit to the game.

What do we have left? Graphics and gameplay. Believe it or not, I'm known to play a game with easy gameplay to the end, simply because it's easy. If the game has good graphics it helps with this. I've also been known to play though a game with battles I didn't enjoy that much (Time Flies) simply because the graphics were purdy.

Ah well. In general RPG making (as in professional), I'd say Gamplay, (atmosphere), Music, Story, Graphics. Since its hard to get atmosphere in ohr games, for them I'd say gameplay, graphics, story, music. Though you should do your best to excel at all these.

Focus on ALL aspects, there is no IMPORTANT one... since ALL of them are IMPORTANT.

btw, I think this is RMZ's second or third thread on the same topic. Raspberry!

What this simply amounts to (even though there were 5 million threads on this same topic in the past), none are more important. What you need is the best balance of all of them.

There's always the example of tetris, pac-man etc. though. Those definitly play better when they are made with gameplay is focus rather than graphics or 3D-ness, whatever. I've played truly awful pacman games where the game creator decided to improve all aspects of the game rather than focus on the gameplay. I think the lack of consideration of other aspects makes those games better.

Anyway, it seems that we are not agreeing that all aspects are equally important.

You're mostly fools, so I won't bother replying to this thread after this, but:

Don't focus on 'everything' in a game. That's a stupid idea, because it's highly unlikely that one game is going to be great in every category. Instead, concentrate on whatever the game's theme is and make the best if it- everything else is second burner.

ex. Mario and Luigi: The entire focus of the game is on timing the A/B buttons in correspondence with the Mario brothers. To get better at the game, all you have to do is associate things with those two buttons more readily. All of the extra minigames use the same concept, and the equipment system is designed to augment whatever you have each individual mario brother doing. (Granted, it's the most poorly done aspect of the game) Everything else about M&L is pretty weak (except the dialogue), but it's still a fantastic game because it emphasizes its idea better than any other game on the market.

Enough said.

I very much agree with you, JSH, however:

If you noticed, there is no such thing as the "perfect game", not even in commercial games. All games, whether or not their good, all have a point in which they lack. It's all a part of being human. We as human beings are not capable of creating anything to be perfect and absolutely foolproof. It's just a fact of life.

You just give your game the best shot you possible can, and if other people want to dis that, then oh-freaking-well.

Setu, thank you for saying something totally unnecessary and unhelpful.
Of course it's impossible to make a perfect game. You're not going to be able to make a brilliantly perfect balance between all aspects, so why not focus? Why not do the best with what you already know you can do well? Why not let the writers write, the scripters script, the composers compose, etc?

...And get other people to do the other stuff? :D
