In my recent game The True Meaning of Christmas, I implemented a rough version of a battle system that involved the use of every character in every battle. To put it another way, you had to have each character or else you would not be able to win. This system took battles to a higher level from the BORING space bar holding "stuff" found in many OHR games.

Try the game and comment on the system.

Here's a hint if you can't figure it out:

Guy attacks freez dried elves
Blue attacks hyper elves
Red attacks frozen elves
Green heals damage

I messed up the first release by giving the characters too much HP. Hopefully I'll correct it soon.

I think you're shooting for an ungodly impossible game then, granted that each of the characters must be found and don't join in the natural course of the game.

First of all thank you for replying to this post.

Mr. Firestorm,

If you were using this system, why would you make the characters optional or have to be sought after?
Therefor it is possible to implement this system with proper planing.

Jabbercat,

The system needs a little work. Maybe it will be possible to run from all the battles except boss fights, which will use a differnt strategy all together.

no_shot,

Thank you

There will be more to the battles, right? I mean, "Blue" can and should do more than attack hyper elves and "Red" can and should do more than attack frozen elves, right? I don't really consider "round peg goes into round hole" gameplay strategy now.

I think every character should be useful but not absolutely necessary. I also don't think that each character having one attack that adds to a combo is good. The player will just use the combo over and over again and the differences and other attacks in the characters won't matter.

Yeah, I agree, but also, if somehow Ulta3 can create this game, then do it. I like games with lots of characters during battle, like FF4 (Which has 5). I also like games that have lots characters period, like FF6 (14).

Really, I gotta say this is a really intense game to make. It'll be mighty hard, but if you are an excellent plotscripter, then it might not be so bad. Maybe I should help you if possible.

Ok thanks once again for responding. For those who have doubt about this system please download my game The True Meaning of Christmas to see the a rough version of the system implemented.

The moves of the the Blue and Red elves have two results they are

Blue slows down the hyper elves and slows down any opponent or hero
Red speeds up/unfreezes frozen elves and speeds up any opponent or hero

One other thing to note is that it isn't just a chain of combos. The Red elf is the only one who wields fire and therefor the only one that can melt the frozen elf. The blue elf is the only one who wields ice and therefor the only one that can freeze (slow down) hyper elves.

Just to reiterate: this is implemented already in my game!

I don't like this idea. It sounds like it would increase boredom, not lessen it. You'd just be doing the same "combo" over and over again. Like W-Summon KOTR, Mime^Infinity.

Unless some enemies needed a combination of attacks.

like a rock creature: You'd have to freeze then heat several times to defeat it (errosion)

or 'innovative' out of battle puzzles. Freeze water to cross it or light a charcoal floor to keep enemies from crossing it or combine their powers to make water.

elements are always a good laugh.

If that was pulled off, sucessfully, then it would add a higher element to RPGs on the OHR. You shouldn't have to require 4 characters that you don't automatically receive in order to win, too.

In the event that a required character dies, you should have time to revive that character before your enemy attacks you again and deals another death blow to your just revived character (We all know how annoying that can get)

Simply put, this idea could be prooved sucessful only if it is done right.
Now I must go...
