When I put "input string (1)", nothing happens. The script will wait for the player to press "enter" before continuing, but when I display the string, nothing comes up.

"Z" is shoot.
"SPACE" or "ENTER" clears the lasers on the screen so you can fire again (you can only have three lasers on the screen at one time).

"Wait" commands are fun. Actually, you don't need it to wait to see if the player has pressed anything. Technically, if the player did press a key while the script was "waiting," nothing would happen. ...
